I finally picked up the brother-in-law's old ST yesterday... I think it'll need more that half a tube of Autosol & a free weekend to sort this lot out! I need to find some bits to sort out the debris after taking the fairing off, the brakes need a rebuild, the gearbox needs to come out for a new clutch, there's some pretty impressive corrosion to be dealt with... what fun!

It came off the road 10years ago after the BIL was knocked off it - it was wearing an RT fairing, engine bars & panniers at the time, which probably saved the core bike from more damage, but those additions are no more as he took them off & binned them after the shunt.

It's down the list of jobs to be done at the moment, so I have a bit of time to get the missing bits together. Anyone know the best way to get hold of a parts book for one of these?

Lots of manuals online....A quick google will turn them up, but HERE is a good start for info :)

PS that looks like a money pit to me :comfort

Yeah but don't worry I'll take it off your hands and save you all that expense :D

Looks nice and original , by doing it yourself it needn't cost that much to get on the road. Sort after model be kind to it:cool:

Looks like an easy resto to me. The only obvious awkward (expensive) part is the rubber clock surround.

The St is a great bike. Much nicer to ride than a g/s and rarer - they only made a few thousand of them over a two year period.

I am a little ahead of you on a similar project. My bike was in a similar state as yours, but my frame is in better condition, but the rear shock is MUCH worse than yours.
You seem to have all the bits there, just need a strip, clean, and re-assemble.
I am part way through doing a recondition, rather than a restore to factory spec..... but i will NOT be changing it into a G/S. (will be removing the huge instrument binnacle, and fitting an Acewell though.... and re painting in a non ST colour...as I like the silver/blue with blue pinstripe BWM used on the RS)

The ST is a rare beast, and although this will take time, effort and money, it will be worth it IMHO.

Good Luck:thumb2

That'll look good, when it's done :thumb2

I'd be tempted to keep it standard though (clocks, colour etc.), for the future value, if nothing else ;)

Sounds fantastic Rob. What say I drop it round to yours next weekend, and pick it up next Spring? :thumb2

If I had the space i'd love to. It's really rewarding sorting out a bike like that...and at £40 an hour it would be a bargain for you :D

it looks great ,I have always liked the st
I would be well happy too have that in my workshop,as Rob Says it looks an easy job too sort out have fun
