This is why: Racing numbers on 'trail' bikes.

I don't think that racing numbers are illegal per se but the MSA (which governs 4-wheeled motorsport) rightly say that it is against their rules. I assume that the ACU and other event-governing bodies have similar rules.

Thank Fcuk - some sense.......................:thumb2

I read this thread a while ago, and thought - "how the fcuk can it be illegal to have a race number on a road vehicle?" :nenau

I think its all about presenting an image. If you ride a full on enduro bike with the bare minimum to make it legal, a loud pipe, horrible coloured race jersey, race numbers and sponsors stickers then the impression you are giving is that you are racing, not enjoying the countryside, rambling on motorbikes or whatever.

We should presenting the image of responsible users - ie quiet exhausts, plain clothes, plain bikes. This might not go down well with folk who like to pretend to be a race hero and I bet the majority of these havent done an enduro and forgot to take their numbers off -they are the wanabees. But the choice is simple - brush up our image or loose more lanes.

And one more thing 90% of the folk you will see walking or cycling on the lanes will be yer average punter who has no interest in the ramblers association or any other of the campaign groups who wish to see trail riding banned. They are just out to enjoy fresh air, views and peace and quiet, plain and simple. Don't treat them as the enemy because in fact most of them will be quite happy to see responsible trail riding on a legal route. I go walking and mountainbiking and I defo am not a rambler! that said if some guy on an enduro bike goes past at 70 with a straight through pipe I'd be perfectly within my rights to be annoyed at him. Someone who is not a biker would also be within their rights to take it a stage further and complain to the council or even report it to the police.

I noticed you posted this on another forum, timpo and got a bit of a frosty response. There needs to be a big pr campaign on this - if you want to wear race numbers and ride a loud bike then take up motocross or enduro- there are plenty of events and its not too expensive. Then for the weekends between races use a bike with a road legal exhaust and dark colours!

Sure but perception and reality are sadly very different. In an ideal world people judge you by your actions but in reality people tend to see no further than your looks (or what you are wearing / riding).

The issue here is that although for some folk its fun and cool to look like you just rolled of the finish line of an enduro (or whatever) its presenting trail riding in a way which is bad for the pastime as a whole.

IMHO I think anyone who rides an illegal bike (whether it's not taxed, not insured or just loud) anywhere is asking for trouble and is a complete TWAT!
Not only do they risk having their bikes crushed but they are spoiling it for everyone else and giving the ramblers (and everyone else) all the ammo they need for closing down all the lanes.
Just use common sense it doesn't cost anything, alternatively not using it could cost us everything!
And as for a sticker promoting you as a responsable rider and showing that you care about the trails/green lanes...

The TRF allready sell stickers at £1 each.
Right now I'll get off my soapbox:rob

I have had the same number on my bike since I was a kid. I have done many motocross and enduro races too. Weirdly enough, the number I have always used has turned out to be my kids birthday's, couldn't have worked out better if I planned it so the numbers are staying. You think that bright orange KTM, bright yellow Suzuki, etc. draws any more attention just because it has some numbers on it!? :comfort

My bike is 100% road legal, I am a full TRF member and I ride as careful as I can while still enjoying myself. I proudly carry my number on my bike and I see no need to hide it from fear of being noticed by some uninformed rambling idiot or police officer. If anything, it makes me more identifyable which 'they' should see as a good thing.

The day they make it illegal to carry numbers on legal trail bikes is when it will come off.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with people who race and who also use the country side for enjoyment. And so what if they use their race kit to go and explore the trails. Wearing plain clothes is more dangerous to us as it certainly does not provide the right amount of protection. What is next? Shouldn't we not wear helmets and neck braces because it makes us look like battle bots?

The TRF sticker means nothing to an uninformed rambler who doesn't know and doesn't care what it looks like, chances are they can't even see it through the mud that covers the bike.

Some weeks ago I suggested that I looked forward to seeing you out on the trails on your now "100% legal" bike. You are welcome to come out with me anytime you like on the trails that I have been shown around Llangollen.
But if you turn up on a bike with race numbers on, I will insist that they are removed before we turn a wheel.
Simple as.

My numbers cannot be removed unless I remove the entire side panel sticker. They are part of the bike. Guess I won't be riding with you then :thumb2

wake up call guys...

race numbers left on bikes isn't the issue, don't you realise....

walkers and horse users find the big noisy thing that sits between your legs the problem (oh er)

Motorbikes in the countryside, in over crowded britain are considered by every other country side user a problem and they won't rest until they are banned. I'd be very surprised if in the next few years a blanket ban appears just leaving events on private land:confused:

I have numbers on my bike 'cos I actually race it rather than just pose.

When it goes on lanes I tape over them, it's not hard :mmmm

Given you are so into image I suggest you give it a go, it actually looks much cooler (in an understated way) than pristine plastic fantastic boy racer graphics :thumb

Same thing happened to me not so long ago, the guy had Silver Numbers 241 and the bike on a stand and Tyre warmers on a KTM Motorcross bike

He left us after the first BYWAY to ride down a footpath never again did I offer my services on the TBM Forum.

Focussing so much on the number itself makes you no better than an uninformed idiot rambler that thinks every rider with a number is an illegal rider. You are as uneducated as they are. :blagblah

Bakerman - fastest in car park, yeah sure. Definitely. Same as every numpty with his twat suit and GS, best round the world adventurer in the car park :D We are all wanabee's to an extent
