Boy, this thread has become a bit "hot" over race numbers...
As a newbie to green laning I am struggling to see the issue with having race numbers on display. Yes I know its easy to tape them over / take them off etc.
If it truly is such a big deal, then how come the TRF don't mandate no race numbers on their rides??
Personally, I think the *real* issue is not really about race numbers at all but instead is about riding considerately (which the TRF does mandate).

Fair enough, race numbers, loud exhausts, small number plates, kitted out like your riding the Dakar isn't exactly a great advert for trail riders in general BUT surely the biggest problem are the guys who ride with no consideration for anyone else who may be out and about, walking, horseriding, mountain biking etc.
IMO the bigger problem are the guys who ride reckless, too fast for the conditions etc.
Lets face it, everyone speeds on the road, on the open road its not so much of a problem - through towns, built up areas with schools etc is a different story.
If more people rode with a bit more consideration for the safety of everyone maybe the image would change and less lanes would be shut?
And no I'm not a TRF member..............not yet anyway!

I'm treated better when riding my GS than when on my 2 stroke ktm. Also if your planning on going out near any ( i said NEAR ) forrestry commission land beware last sunday a forestry commission worker in a van tried to ram me off my bike. I have no excuss for being in the wrong place, and agree that my number should have been noted and forwarded to the law, however I feel that the forestry commission trying to ram motorcyclists ( even naughty ones ) is just going to escalate things. At the time he tried to ram me he would have not known if I was an adult or a teenager. This happened in Clocaenog forest, south of denbigh, north wales.

The Forestry commission work very closely with a lot of Offroad enduro clubs around the UK ie; Welsh trail riders (Cambrian rally ) Yorkshire enduro club ( Ryedale Rally ) and loads more ...And they let us have access to there forests for these great events the last thing anyone needs is Dickheads pissing them off and fecking it up for the rest of us who stay legal ...

Take note of the FC vehicles index number?
Report the incident to the Police?
If you didn't, then adding this 'big deal' to this thread is surely a troll.
As Pipster has said, your information will only turn folk against you, as many ride the legal routes through FC land, and/or compete in motorsport events on such land, and your posting here is neither one thing nor the other, so only feeding the antis with fodder.
Before you go out next time, I can only suggest you research your route and ensure you don't ride on private land......

I read it as meaning more people in a club have a louder voice to help keep lanes open. If only individulals were fighting a cause, without any 'union', the voices would be less significant. that is how i read it, i may be wrong.

I agree with everything you said. I had originally been on a greenlane, but then strayed... and was enjoying a nice hardcore firetrack/access road.
I assume from your tone your quite happy for people in vans to ram motorcyclists, as long as one has a 'trespasser' label, and the other has 'warden' label.

You were riding illegally, and there are farmers I know of that would empty a few cartridges as close as they could if you rode on their 'hardcore' fields.....

I don't think for a minute that any of us are suggesting that we want to see people getting knocked off their bikes by anyone, but to bring attention to it on a public forum is a tad naive. So far, you have had gentle replies. I'd leave it there if I were you.

In the UK we have three main land owning groups that let us have access for Offroad motorsport events one is the Ministry of defence the other the Forestry commission and last private land owners like farmers...
With out them Offroad motor sport will die a death in the UK ...I am passoinate about any form of offroad motorcycling and imho if we start to piss any of the above off they will pull the plug and that will be the end

I haven't yet ridden my GS off road and probably never will....but as a joe average bloke who likes to mountain bike up mountains and also walk the paths and moorlands I can't believe the fuss going on here.
If I am on a track,path or moor and and come across a person riding a trail bike in a sensible manner, who maybe stops out of courtesy while I walk/cycle past then why should I have a problem with him having a number on the side of his bike or get upset over the colour of his clothes?
If the bike has a numberplate then there will be as likely as not 3 numbers on that and also some letters. What difference do a couple more make?
If however a person has no extra numbers on his bike and is wearing dark clothes but is riding like a knob and almost knocks me off, then I think I might just get slightly annoyed.
And if I did venture out on the gs and maybe got lost and ended up on a forestry road and came across a forestry commission employee, then I would expect them to politely explain the error of my ways to me and point out the nearest safe exit route, not try and force me off the road. And if he did try and force me off the road, I think I might just get slightly annoyed.
As to the suggestion that all trail riders should wear dark clothing and open face helmets. Please don't suggest that in case New Labour make it another new law.
( If it's a sunny day and I'm passing through Llanberis I'll sometimes totter up Snowdon. You'll recognise me because I will be wearing my ancient tatty bright yellow reflective works jacket and have half a dozen mars bars in one pocket and a bottle of orange pop in the other. Perhaps one day I'll be turned back by the wardens for not having the latest breathable wind/waterproof gear, food for three days on the mountain, satnav, ruksack,map, beacon....and worst of all .....wearing loud clothes ) If/when it does happen, I think I might just get slightly annoyed.
