This weekend I will mostly be fitting Renthal Twinwalls

Hi Tobers

Great thread, very useful to me as i've developed tennis elbow since i got the 1200 and I suspect the bars as the problem.

Do you have a sketch of the required bar end thingy that I would have to make to keep the original handguards?

Bit cheeky I know, but seeing that your our recognised bar expert now, I thought i'd ask.

Regards Shep

Yes, I was getting a bit of tennis elbow as well. I've had it before and it was only cured by a stunningly painful cortisone injection (in fact 10 injections) right into the painful bit. Ow.

Anyway, here is the bar end thingy.

The main big black bit is the original bar end, and you can see where it has been machined down to the correct diameter to fit into the Renthal bars.

You can also see the bolt running through it. The hole the bolt goes through is much larger than the diameter of the bolt, so you need a bush of some sort, in fact the very sort which is shown at the top of the pic. The ribbery thing on the right is from a cheapo set of Oxford bar ends, but I had to trim its diameter a tad with a sharp knife (taking care not to slash an artery or disfigure myself) to get it to slide in nicely.

I used a washer on the "outer end" of the bar end to ensure the bolt didn't get drawn into the big hole in the bar end.

As it's now warm & sunny, you could happily run without handguards if you like, and just temporarily put some cheapo bar ends like the Oxford ones in. This will sort your comfot problem out at the cost of the bars (£79 or so) and the risers (£60 or so from Nippy I think).

In the meantime, it may come to pass that I develop some properly machined Renthal fitting bar ends which slot straight in. Wont be cheap, but a complete bars/risers/bar-ends set looks likely with you choosing your own Renthal bar sweep, rise etc etc, then getting the risers & ends from Nippy.

By the way, my Renthal Twinwalls are the "Sebastian Tortelli" version - lots of different versions with different angles etc. You can also fit Fatbars as well, similar but no crossbar.

O'Tobers Guru... Very nice work!

Is the insert thingy from the same Oxford kit you got, or have you sourced it from somewhere else?

I'd be interested in buying a kit as I'm not very comfortable with butchering the OEM inserts. I might go to the BMW dealer and ask how much they want for them.

Very nice job! I guess my excuses to not fit them are running thin... :D

:beerjug:

excellent FAQ, big thanks to Tobers for making it and Mouse for putting it all together...

QUICK TIP FOR FITTING GRIPS:

the holy grail of fitting tight grips to handlebars is... hairspray... it's nice and slippy when wet so the grips slide on extra easy... then once it dries it offers the perfect amount of light adhesion to keep the grips in place, whilst still making removal easy enough...

Tobers...might be worth PM'ing Ricardo Khun over on Advrider to find out what he used to use as bar ends when fitting his renthal kits...

:)

Can the original bars be bent to a new shape or do you have to replace them?

I wouldn't bend them - you'll stress them and they'll snap just as you pull out in front of a large articulated lorry.

Save up for the Renthals instead.

renthal fat bars

Hi I fitted a set of bars - code 608-01-TT (KTM 01/02/04/05/06) to my GS1200 this weekend.
Took under an hour.
The riding position is a little further forward than the originals and I probably need a set of bar raisers to improve the reach.
Reason for fitting? I commute into London every day along the A12 & A13 from Essex. Te original bars are too wide and cause me middle lane overtaking problems, particularly with vans. The new bars are a couple of inches (sorry pound, shillings and pence) narrower and should make the progress easier.
I've also fitted bar muffs for the winter.
Couple of questions:
1 - where can I buy a pair of (preferably cheap) bar raisers
2 - where can I buy (again cheap) a rear hugger to reduce muck being thrown into the read suspension area
3 - has anyone made a prop stand extender? The new Renthal bars offer me less leaverage when puting the bike upright (sorry I'm on the short side of 5'7") and I have temporarily gaffered a wooden block to the stand.

Hi Colin

1 - I can help here. I've already got some Nippy Norman bar risers fitted and in a forgetful moment bought some Wunderlich items by mistake. They're still in their packet, cost a shade under £50 incl. postage, yours for £35. I was going to fit them to compare, but can't be @rsed to be honest! Collection shouldn't be a problem either!

2 - No such thing as a cheap hugger - try here for one of the many sweetshops available, ditto for the stand extender. I think he does a couple from memory.

If the risers are of any interest give me a call on 221399 home or 07710 075257 work during the week. I'll also show you my hugger - not cheap but rather good.

Cheers

Simon

:D Last time I offered someone a look at my hugger I got put away for three days!!!!! :D

On a sensible note would those handguards of a a Triumph Tiger fit therefore keeping the narrowness of the bars??

Renthal Twinwall - Sebastian Tortelli 998 Deleted

Tobers,

Do you happen to know the dimensions of your TwinWall bars? The Sebastian Tortelli 998's are not in the Renthal range anymore - I gues he can't be a 'winning name' anymore.

Cheers,

David.

hi

Just get any "998" bars (in whatever colour you want); they're all the same - Renthall just change the rider names so a "Kevin Windham 998" is exactly the same as a "Street Supermoto 998"

Jon

and... actual dimensions of each model are here

(you can also see the various 998's have the same dimensions...)

:)
