Hello everyone,

As I have already seen in the sticky notes straight away and it says don't test drive these bikes??? i mean a little confused to say the least how can you get a feel for something before you buy it if you don't test drive it? Anyway I am here to get you reviews and thoughts on the GS1200 Adventure. I have had many bikes in the past all from scooters to KTM's to Sport touring bikes, i have been around the block so to speak. Now I want something brand new out of the showroom with a little more power than normal that I can go on long journeys in comfort, and the BMW GS1200 has caught my eye. After looking for the GS1200 online for sale checking out the specs and a few videos on YouTube I have become very interested in this bike. I do plan on going for a test drive or 2 because in my eyes you have to get a feel for the bike 100% no doubt about it. But what I need from you guys as said above is some experiences

What’s the ride really like is it stable and does it feel safe?

What is the maintenance like, easy enough to keep on top of or is there some little bits that love to go wrong?

Some specs below

Year: 2016
Manufacture/Model: BMW R GS 1200 Adventure
Engine/engine type: 1170 cc displacement from a four-stroke flat twin engine with balancer shaft, four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshaft, wet sump lubrication
Gears: 6-speed
Price: $14,409

So what are your thoughts guys help me out where you can

Thanks guys

I ride my GS every day in all weathers on all types of roads, even when I leave work on a dark, wet and cold winters night to ride on filthy roads, filled with cars which I'm seeing through a drizzle covered visor riding a big GSA feels like an 'event' that makes you feel good.

The don't test ride post is tongue in cheek as a lot of folks who have never ridden these types of bikes tend to deride them as tractors / slow /ugly etc. However once ridden, a lot become owners as they are surprised as to how good the bike is.

So don't ride one....

When I bought my first GS in 2010, my friend that's on here strongly advised me not to test ride one. I didn't, and haven't been without a GS since.

If you're getting a new one, you may want to consider the Triple Black GSA.:D

This is what i like/wanted to see loads of good reply's. The more i am looking into them and talking to you guys i feel like a kid at Christmas again

Hi Dustup and welcome,

My first BMW was an F800gt, nice 'first' bike and all that but after a few months realised I needed something better. When the 800 was in for some warranty work there was a delay so they asked if I wanted to take a bike out for an hour rather than drinking more coffee. I said why not can I have a go on the 1200GS. Well they must have misheard me as when he handed me the keys it was the GSA and fook it looked big and I seriously was scared but thought what the hell. Well within 100 yards it was wow, where the hell did that weight go? Had a blast and was really impressed. Roll on 6 months and when I decided to order a GS I thought I should ride the GS and GSA one after another. I expected to prefer the slightly smaller GS but it just didn't seem as 'planted' as the GSA and my mind was made up. So now had the GSA 2 weeks and at Pidcocks tomorrow for its running in service. I have tried to explain to a few mates, who have bikes, how good I think it is Now I have spent a little time on it and all I can say is although they are expensive I am 100% convinced it was worth every penny.

Love the looks, although not to everyone's taste,
Love the power delivery, just punches forward in every gear
Comfy and easily do more miles before you have to stop than my bladder can do.
For a big beast it handles beautifully and far better than the F800gt. Even in the rain felt planted
Imposing on the road, especially with additional lights on, and had more drivers drift to the left when I approach

Fitted a few bits and bobs that the experts on here suggested like mudsling, fender extender, hand guards, rad guards etc so around another £300-£400 to get how I wanted it. Nav V integrates well with the bike and although expensive worth it.
See your in Nottingham, as am I, so if you want a closer look and chat pm me

I am truly getting really excited now all in all the bike sounds perfect and so many good reviews. The fact that it feels safe due to it being a big bike makes me feel good like a weight off my shoulders. And when it comes to the looks i think they are mean looking (in a good way)

Thanks for the reply's PM coming soon

It's R 1200 GS Adventure, not GS1200 Adventure.

I wonder where this persistent erroneous nomenclature comes from, and why it persists?

Naming format is pretty clear on the Motorrad website:

Is it an American thing? Like the way they can't get aluminium right either? ;)

Good luck with bike choice OP. :thumb
