Throttle body explosion

I had a heck of a scare this weekend in Luxembourg when my right throttle body exploded and was blown off ......no kidding I had just started the engine after a short pause and there was a fecking load bang and a flash - instinct made me hit the kill switch and when I look down the right hand throttle body had been blown backwards from behind the cylinder into the bottom of the airbox and was left hanging lose. MiGSel took a picture which he might post up later.

A back fire occurred and the ensueing explosion blew the throttle body clean off.
After initial panic had subsided I was able to put it back into position and refasten the hose clips and everything was fine - the back ran sweet as ever but it gave me one heck of a fright.

In case anyone read an earlier thread I posted about seemingly losing some power between 3000 and 5000 rpm I am guessing that the hose clip on the front of the throttle body may have been loose allowing some air in . After the spectacular explosion and retightening it all up the power loss was gone too so conclusion was that it was all one of the same problem.

When I mentioned this to a few people back at the campsite it seems that this kind of throttle body back fire is not unheard of and had been reported elsewhere so if it happens to you and you think your bike has just exploded - don't panic

I think someone BMW boxer-aknowledged wanted sabotage your bike. Maybe an ex-girlfriend?

You should have turbo charged both cylinders

Exact same thing happened to my mate's R1150 GS in France this year. He restarted after filling up and a backfire did the damage. It was easy to fix but you will have found that you'll have lost the wee rubber cap over the balancing tube - best replace it before something gets sucked in.

Wouldn't like to have it happen to my R1200 - the jubilee clips have been replaced with something that takes special tools to fit. Progress, I guess.
