Good Evening, GS Sages.

After a successful and fun period since my Final Drive issues last year, my 09' GSA has decided that once again: life isn't worth living without issues.
I had a persistent issue where the throttle was misbehaving recently - trial, error and unwished but necessary disassembly narrowed this down to the left-hand throttle cable and lo and behold....the bloody thing had somehow managed to break the thread on the fitting which goes into the throttle body housing!

On removing it, I found a lovely pair of kinks as well, one in the TB side and another on the bowden box side. It was a real BMW "adventure" getting stuck in and swapping that out, but all was well....until a week later when the left side kept sticking open!

Left-hand throttle body keeps sticking. Sometimes it's full, other times it's when it's roughly 4/5 to full.
I want to say it isn't coincidence, but having pulled everything apart again today I've found the bowden box and rest of the throttle cabling is absolutely fine - it's 100% the actual TB. Whenever this is pulled to 4/5 or so open (or more) it has a tendency to just stay open.

I've fully pulled the TB out to inspect it -I'm absolutely not lubricating it with anything for fear of "lubing that which should not be" with anything I shouldn't, I can't see anything "stuck" in there either. It doesn't seem to take a lot to close it again and I'm almost tempted to say it just needs a more robust spring, but if it's a symptom of something else entirely. I can't see any sign of the actual pulley getting that dreaded break or cracking leading to an infamous "JB weld and a washer" fix, for what it's worth.

Any ideas before I bang my head against it as the next solution?

Worn butterfly spindles? / plastic parts?
Not that I can tell - I've had a struggle for time this week to even go near the bike but having pulled the throttle body again to inspect things once more it almost seems like the spring just doesn't have enough "oompf" to pull the mechanism back again.
At rest it also doesn't seem to be closing fully either. Nothing seems to be impeding it doing so.

I'm going to swap the springs over this weekend and see if that changes anything and if so, will need to find a suitable replacement, so watch this space!

If the spindle has worn, the butterfly may be dragging against the throttle body, which means the spring may not have enough power, to pull the butterfly back

I have some throttle body's in the shed, but I'd need to check what year they cover, and I'm stuck on an cardio ward with my mum ATM so getting home is usually late in the evening

simple check if the throttle body's the issue - take the cable off and test the butterfly operation

for last 5 years I've had an on off weird notch in the operation of mine (at about 1/3rd operation - throttle pull feels more like a webber twin choke idea, where the second venturi only opens when ripping it) - it never seemed to be the silly cable split left side - beside the tank to the splitter box (great design !!!), or the ridiculous inaccessible splitter box, nor the throttle body's

I gave up worrying, but later found if you lube the cable on the way out of the throttle grip it goes away - came back in a week later and stayed for a year - lubricated it again and so far its been gone for 18 months - very strange !!!

I did wonder - I've read that lubricating BMW throttle cables is allegedly a sin as they have a teflon lining, but figured as I was going to replce the cable anyway "why not".

I've since pulled the entire bowden box out and inspected it (seems fine) and also the other cables (which also seem fine). Delightfully inaccessible spot though I did find I could get at it without needing to pull "every" body panel off.....just half.

I tried lubricating the cable with some Dry PTFE which initially seemed nice, but the symptoms remained.
I've since swapped out the left hand cable which did admittedly have a bit of what seemed to be a "kink" in both ends (nothing like a 45' angle or anything but still a clear point it had a bias).

Again, no joy - same behaviour.
I've since sourced a replacement TB (including TP Sensor, idle unit and a whole left-hand throttle cable!).
I tried comparing them both side-to-side and honestly cannot see for the life of me any actual "differences" between them.

Regardless, I've swapped this out - I'm going to give it a test ride and see how I get on but really need to get it up to operating temps to be confident all is well, so will likely need to wait until the weekend for that.

Watch this space....

I'd replace the complete throttle body with a used spare from Motorworks.
Thats what i did.
It was cheaper at the BMW dealer for them to supply and fit than it was for Motor works just for parts.

So I let them do it.
Was like a different bike when I got it back...smooth as silk!
The throttle must have been going over time and I had unknowingly adjusted my riding style to suit in slow moving traffic etc, as soon as i left the garage i was like.. wooah this is great lol

Sorry for the delay for the update - tl;dr is replacing the TB entirely got things back on track.
Rides like a different bike, really smooth on the throttle now like never before! Clearly must've been deteriorating over time but I've just not realised it.

Well, just in time for the weather eh!
