Ticking / Rattle

Dear Folks,

I was wondering if any of you clever types might be able to explain a strange noise from my bike engine.

It's a 1150 GSA (2005) with 22K on the clock, regularly serviced.

I find that occasionally the engine will 'tick'. This happens in hot weather and under acceleration. Not screaming hard acceleration - even just a gentle increase in RPM will produce the ticking (a fast ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka noise).

I've searched through the forums, and found plenty on big-end knock, but it isn't a knocking noise.

Anyone know what this is? Sign of impending doom?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt could it be the throttle butterfly's. There is a device called the ticker killer that stops the noise but I wouldn't worry cause mine does it as they all do. I think it's caused by slight wear in the butterfly causing it to flap slightly but I not aware that this causes any problems. It doesn't happen under full throttle cause you have the buterfly open to the stop.

Wearing earplugs is the cheapest and easiest way of rectifying the problem. :thumb

Throttle body noise is very common.

With the bike ticking over at a standstill, have a listen on the right hand side.
If there`s a 'ticka-tacka' sound, just try pressing gently against the pivot shaft for the throttle quadrant to see if it goes quiet.
If that`s it,don`t worry about it.

Another fairly common one is a bit of chatter from the left hand camchain.
Mine (though on an 1100) went quieter...almost silent,in fact, after switching to 20W/50 oil.
Again,I wouldn`t worry about it.

Sounds more likely to be pinking to me. do a search on pinking and settle down for as good read.
I had a hall sender start to fail that caused pinking under gently riding, quite a few of the 11** gs s pink under load when hot, and the general consesus seems to be dont worry about it :thumb .

Somebody told me that the ticking was the normal noise of the fuel injectors.

Thank you for all of your help.

I know pinking sounds and it's not that, but I didn't know about the noise from the throttle butterfly or the cam chain, so I'll have a closer listen in a hour or two and see if I can locate it.

The bike will soon be rolling in for its' 24 K service which I think is a major one isn't it. Does anyone know how far would their service inspection go?, and if they were to find a fault, would I still be covered on a bike with that many miles?

Ta,
Matt

Mine does exactly the same  Used to be concerned about it, but a year down the line all I do know is go LA LA LA and it all goes away. :D

ok, so the general advice in the event of this problem is to wear good earplugs and sing LA LA LA until it goes away. :D

Sorted. :thumb

Always get the very best advice at UKGSer. BM probably have a technical term for this particular procedure (the fartzilouder technique) but whichever way it works. The GS is more gattling gun than laser gun. :bounce1
