Tightening Torques........

Guys, any of us out there who can tell me the tightening torques for the sump guard? I`ve got the BMW Reprom and can`t find it on there (more likely because I am simply stupid ).

It`s for the two rear M8 anti vibration mounting studs and the two front M6 fasteners, all of which, of course, hold the sump guard onto the bottom of the engine!

Any help greatly appreciated



Actually, thinking about it, I`ve got an engineers handbook at work so i`ll get my sad ass into gear in the morning and take a look.

But in the meantime, if anyone knows................

ta mate, good link but I feel somewhat too specialised - for instance the M8 values list values for 5D, 8G, 10K and 12K - I should know better, being an engineer, and I`m guessing it relates to the tightness of the fit (not to be confused with the torque - we use a 3G fit on some work we do for Cat).

Perhaps, and happily admitting I have only 4 brain cells left after the constant onslaught of red wine, I am not reading it correctly or is there a more `user friendly` scale?

Nonetheless, I remain thankful for your kindness in trying to help a simple drunkard

M6 = 6Nm, M8 = 19Nm according to the Haynes manual.

You're welcome , and of course, if you move one click to the left you will find 'std steel bolt torques'.

If you know the Grades of the fasteners then simply thumb along the table to your requirements.
Yes they're fractional but I'm sure you can do the metric conversion ok.

It's a sump guard, not a critical bolt holding in opposition with others, or that will affect any moving bits

the only important thing about tightening up the sump guard bolts is that they don't rattle when you're on the bumpy stuff.....in fact, I think I use nylocks on mine so that I can have them a bit looser than four knuckles and a grunt.....they are prone to getting whacked with stones and shit, and although I couldn't give you a rational technical explanation, having them slightly looser but still tight enough to not rattle feels 'right'
