A brilliant read - and apologies for the Miner's Standard clash.
Oh, no apology necessary - I was just being a dick.A brilliant read - and apologies for the Miner's Standard clash.
Very enjoyable Bill, I always like riding past this one, it's a shame it's slowly returning to nature. Linwood Methodist church.View attachment 518985
It's really difficult to find at that resolution (hardly better on the museum's own site!) but is it foreground, centre, with the wiring?Talking of people ‘hiding ‘ animals in their work…

but you do wonder, especially in the small rural parishes here, how much hardship was required of the parishioners to be able to build these things
Fabulous.I wonder the same when you look at magnificent cathederal buildings.
As an aside, someone I used to know bought a small former derelict Methodist chapel in Essex, in the middle of nowhere. He renovated it completely, turning it into a very nice (if small) house.
He had the original deeds, which were interesting. The land the chapel was built on was owned by I think five or more families, I guess in small parcels. Three at least could not write, so they signed the bill of sale with a X, literally ‘His mark’.
The large document was in excellent condition. He had it framed nicely and hung on the wall.

Have you tried the Land Registry for copies? Our house is a mid 1850s property once part of very wealthy Farm Estate that ran from The Humber to Suffolk. I asked for the deeds when we cleared the mortgage only to be told by the solicitors that they had burned them all as 'Who would want a load of dusty old papers anyway?'.
