time to say goodbye to my bmw

Sounds like that review is on pre 21 bikes because For 2021 Yamaha addressed all the issues you mention above.

The 2021 update Mt09 is now more refined than before and the lower front end now places more weight over the front wheel. In SP trim, not only do you get a more sophisticated ride tho I’m not sure if the rear shock is a genuine top shelf ohlins or just a rebrand cheap unit made to look like it’s top dollar, it’s still a-lot of bike for relatively little money and has impeccable low speed manners when you just want to take it easy.

I think it’s a great bike for the money.

I think you guys are being a little hard on the GS. I’ve owned 1150, 1200 oil head and now an LC since 2017. All Adventure models. I’ve always bought new with minimal electronic upgrades. Never had ABS cause more to go wrong. Was major annoyance with the 1150 cause needed to remove to access throttle cables ffs!
The LC Rallye I currently have has ABS and traction standard - so couldn’t avoid. Only factory add-ons were centre stand, spot lights and heated grips. I had no issues with previous bikes and lost little money upgrading them. The new LC has a quirky rear brake (needs bled a lot) and shit paint on centre stand and subframe (which I’ve already rectified with powder coating). And that’s it!!
I paid £14,000 new and it’s still worth north of £10k.
Conversely, a jap bike would minimally half in value over same period!! I originally bought a GS cause my ZZR1200 literally fell to bits on Polish and Ukrainian roads!! All the frame and subframe fasteners sheered off with vibration and constant shaking. Kawasaki laughed at me under warranty - saying wasn’t designed for this (even although tourer). I’ve had current GSA all over Europe (including Serbia and Croatian islands) without issue.
Grass is always greener!!
Just saying

I've just spoken to my local dealers and explained the issue. I've booked it in for a service that is due soon and asked them to check the bike for hot starting problems whilst its in there and still under warranty.

In the meantime I'm fitting a bigger battery as a precaution and carrying my booster pack for an upcoming trip to Europe.

It has the potential to be an awesome bike but checking my last service in the book, I've ridden it just 417 miles since July 15th so its a bloody expensive garage ornament.

very different bikes are you planning to tour on it?

I was delighted to get back on a bmw, albeit quality sounds to be taking a bit of a dip with each version (like most modern vehicles), although I have never had a breakdown other than a puncture in tens of thousands of miles (apart from an 1100 GS) . You hit the nail on the head with bmw comfort, unbeatable. Look at the state of this tracer seat on the rh side after 1200 miles, like grandmas piss flaps, no wonder arsey feels right at home!

Like many European Cars, some unfortunately seem to get the Friday made bimmer boxers. Whilst I've rarely had many issues with mine, I do hear quite frequently from those ditching their GS bikes due to reliability issues and some spending more time at dealerships than on the road. Part of me wonders if this is more to do with the sheer numbers being sold, so you're bound to hear more horror stories, but for each of those, I do hear more positive feedback. I've heard the same from Triumph owners where electrical gremlins plague them, from Ducati owners and from KTM owners, but rarely do I hear much to moan about reliability wise from owners of Japanese bikes. Whilst I wouldn't be put off buying another 1200 or 1250, I think I'll leace the 1300 for a few years yet until more reliable data emerges on worth and reliability. The price is the most off-putting thing.

A guy I work with traded his new V4 multistrada for the new GS1300 last August

All singing , dancing the configured price was north of £21k+ and i think they only offered 14k for the multi,

He traded it last week for a Triumph speed twin and a Honda 750 NCX

his trade in price wasn't to bad , 19K , but still he had a 6k hit on the purchase

i asked him why he was getting rid so soon

He felt it didnt offer him any variation, it was the same type of ride, day after day, And it got lost in the bike shed amongst the other Triumph Tigers & older GS's

Tbh, I think many people (understandably) go the wrong route with Motorrad. Many dealers are a pain and either lack knowledge or deflect complaints with the standard “you’re the only that’s complained or mentioned this”
Even their parts department are a joke with absolutely no parts on display and not even a whiff of anything oily. The guys are clueless too and share with car parts?! lol. I like a traditional parts department with loads of tempting goodies and bikes in the background.
Anyway, I got side tracked………..BMW know about every fault with all of their bikes, but you have to go down the correct escalation route. If no joy with the dealer on a major (not fit for purpose) defect, in or out of warranty - you need to complain in writing directly to Motorrad. If it’s an issue they’re aware of here or North America……..then they’ll generally reimburse dealer to fix for you. Obviously serviceable items aren’t included (batteries that are neglected especially)
Know it’s a pain, but they will fix

I think 90 % of solo riders on here would have more fun on a £6k Himmy 450 than a £23K Wankpanzer .

You could have the Himmy and the best looking bike of 2024 and still have £5k change for trips instead of a 1300.

There are a few exceptions like Sticky bollox or those that ride 2 up.

BTW, best looking bike of 2024 is obviously this

Yep - my thoughts exactly. I’ve been very tempted by deals on the 1250 GSA, but it wont do what my £4k K bike and £2.5k 640 Adventure will do …

Hmmmmm , it’s a hard bike to ride .

That looks like a test of the Gen 1 bike, like mine. Most of those issues are cured by a remap and suspension upgrades. The new Gen 4 is a very different machine.

BMW UK regularly use the old ' that has never happened before' line , I got asked to leave the BMW stand at the NEC in 2014 when I collared the technical bods about the issues on my then new 2014 GSA LC and got that reply only for two other punters to jump in saying they had exactly the same issue.
On my 2018 model GSA that had the ECU go t@ts up in Austria the dealer was refreshingly open saying mine was the fifth bike they had with identical issues caused by cost cutting at the factory in fitting non branded ECU's in a production batch . BMW UK claimed they had never heard of the problem

Couldn’t care less as don’t ride in UK.
Too many wankpanzers strewn at the roadside with flat batteries

Most of their bods we get to chat to are marketing wankers. Clueless. Couldn’t even get me one of their fancy staff Motorrad polos at NEC 2 years ago.
Best to write(email) their technical guys.
They usually respond and arrange service visit at your local dealer. This historically has been my best method for results
