Certainly this little battery has quite a job to start the bike and if you don't ride far enough each day to put the charge back in then without a maintenance charger the battery will gradually discharge to the point where it won't start the bike. It is definitely worse in Winter.Whilst I have not measured the quiescent current, I am absolutely convinced that the battery / starter issues on my GS are not due to the tracker. It happens when the weather is cold, so I ride less, and use the heated grips. It doesn’t happen in the so-called summer, when I ride more and don’t use the grips. It even happened after I replaced my battery with a new, higher capacity one. And the bloody bike is on charge now, because it coughed and nearly didn’t start when I was leaving work this evening.
I reckon the charging and starter systems are cost- and weight- reduced to a point where they only just cope unless something isn’t perfect. I would more likely have a Datatool on my next bike than my next bike be a BMW, which is a shame, because in almost every other way, it’s bloody good.
You hope…Certainly this little battery has quite a job to start the bike and if you don't ride far enough each day to put the charge back in then without a maintenance charger the battery will gradually discharge to the point where it won't start the bike. It is definitely worse in Winter.
I measured the bike only discharge current at 6 mA, my dealer quoted me 5mA so that all fits. The problem I had was that with the tracker fitted it was 50mA - so two things were going on - when the bike/battery was new in 2021 and I was riding almost every day this 50mA was still an issue but not a show stopper - however it became a big problem as the battery aged, It became a lottery as to whether or not the bike would start after an 8 hour day at work - the commute to work being about 12-15 miles depending on where I started from.
Anyway brand new battery fitted and tracker removed so worries until this battery gives up after 3 years or so.
Serious question - how will my “dead end” battery charging cable draw on the battery even when switched off/not connected? It’s just 2 dead end cables.………….. If you've got any direct attachments to your battery including a battery changing lead, they will draw on the battery even switched off/not connected, especially in lower temperatures.
I’m happy my battery is almost nine years old. One of few that age I think.A well maintained quality battery should be good for at least 5 yrs.
Not trying to wind you up, but, I would think if you claim on any insurance policy there wouldn’t be any possibility of any money back.and as a final kick in the cock, the not starting from hot sketch thats been a problem form new was finally sorted after the 3 year warranty period had expired and I had bought 2 new batteries for no reason on bmws advice ( turned out to be a faulty starter motor and most likely always was ) This post warranty fix was covered by by 400 quid extendo warranty of which i paid 100 quid excess . i cancelled my extended warranty today with 6 months left and instead of receiving 129 quid pro rata refund i got fuck all as I'd claimed for a repair that had been reported on at least 8 times previously . ...wont be buying anything new from the master race agai you, I would imagine if you claim on any insurance policy
……….Now that it’s fixed - maybe just keep?! loland as a final kick in the cock, the not starting from hot sketch thats been a problem form new was finally sorted after the 3 year warranty period had expired and I had bought 2 new batteries for no reason on bmws advice ( turned out to be a faulty starter motor and most likely always was ) This post warranty fix was covered by by 400 quid extendo warranty of which i paid 100 quid excess . i cancelled my extended warranty today with 6 months left and instead of receiving 129 quid pro rata refund i got fuck all as I'd claimed for a repair that had been reported on at least 8 times previously . ...wont be buying anything new from the master race again
No I appreciate that , my frustration is that the fault was the same from early on and should have been dealt with under the original warranty period, had it have been I wouldn't have paid 100 excess, bought two batteries at 80 quid a pop and lost 129 quid in lost refund. Not the end of the world merely a minor kick in the cock , which as a long married man is only for weeing through anywayNot trying to wind you up, but, I would think if you claim on any insurance policy there wouldn’t be any possibility of any money back.
……..and ironically completely cured at end! LolYeah, looks like it was hard to say goodbye...
It’s all part of the blinkered doctrination .
Same reason as the GSA massive ride around with three ally boxes attached and 50000 lumens of lights burning out incoming retinas , just to pop to the shops.
It’s all part of the ‘road presence and be seen’ bollox as they head off to Loomies or some other shite bike cafe to meet their identikit mate on his similar wankpanzer.
BMW did a good job marketing the British brain dead .
You don’t see it so much in Europe unless you run in to a conga of brits all relying on one sat nav in search of #bikerfriendly€50rooms and steak avec FRITZ !!!
It’s like an annual awakening as the sun pops over the hill and the steeds get un-SORNed.
