have to take the telelever off my GSA to get the alternator out ( the alternator cover bolts are rusted solid and cannot get a decent go at them) , have read all the threads about the telelever arm removal and that's the job for this evening after I take the front end off ( unless someone has a better idea) As per usual the timing cover is showing its age and previous abuse so thought I would take it off and clean it up and give it a respray , anyone got any thoughts on paint to use , was thinking of smooth hammerite - thanks for any help

Don't think you should take it off, there's witchcraft behind it, most I've seen are done in situ. Am presently doing mine using Wurth etch primer, silver laquer then clear laquer.

Still priming at the moment with half the screws out then alternate, got some stainless ones on the way so don't care about getting paint on the old screws.

Hi you two,
A very wise tosser from here told me that the closest colour match that his 'specialist paint supplier' could find was Hyundai Wheat Silver, then finished with either a matt, or satin, lacquer.
Not tried it myself, but will be doing so soon, my bike was purchased with damage to both of the cylinder head covers.
Hope that helps

Hammerite will chip even when used over their fancy primer.
Powder coat would be a better option. To get a colour match flat it off with a plumbers scourer pad then prime and paint.

I used U Pol etch primer. The various bits including the front cover that I have done are still good a year later. Hell of a lot easier than taking the front cover off.

Fair enough. I stopped using hammerite after a frame down tube looked like it had been hit with a shotgun.

Did the heads and rocker covers on my 1100 5 years ago. Used silver Hammerite over etch primer and they still look great - a couple of bubbles where I probably didn't spend enough time rubbing down but no chips whatsoever.

I'm wanting to do mine soon will prob use wheel silver acrylic paint best way clean up cover wire wheels on drill take most bolts out heat up with hair dryer between 2-3 coats done plenty of engines on other bikes just mask rest of engine up simples :beerjug:
