Timing cover refurb for under £20

Mine will need doing. The part prep and paint is the easy bit. It’s getting the bloody thing off which is the problem so will probably do it in situ.

To get the best results you’d need to remove the engine cover (BMW refer to ‘gear case cover’) but doing that is a pretty big job. You would have to drain the engine oil and to get the casing off, remove the crankshaft pulley that drives the alternator belt (not easy without a special tool to hold it while you undo the large nut – final torque 140 Nm;-) The cover should then pull forward with both bearings still in the cover (crankshaft and timing gear) provided you’ve undone all the bolts around the cover! You would need to replace the oil seal in front of the timing cover bearing before reassembly to be on the safe side. Belt pulley to crankshaft M22 x 1.5 Initial torque, 40 Nm Final torque, 140 Nm

Easy enough to remove, makes cleaning timing cover easy on a bench, i will show you my video on how i removed my timing cover

It's pretty easy to remove the timing cover with the engine in situ. I refurbed mine a few years ago when the bike had done approx 35k miles. I took the cover off, removed and binned the bit of sponge from inside, then blasted the cover at work. I used etch primer followed by paint primer then silver paint. The bike has now done 90k miles and is several years older with no sign of corrosion. I should add that I commuted to work all year round until last year so the bike was in a fair bit of crap weather.

Didn’t the front telelever stop you from pulling the front engine case/timing cover off ?

Or am I thinking of the 1150 ?

No, it was a while ago but I don't remember having any difficulty after removing the engine bars.
