How cool is this?

26cc 5.5hp boxer engine. £246. Model plane engines have come on a lot since I was a kid. It's even fitted with electronic ignition!!

26cc and 5.5 hp,how long will that last before needing a rebuild?

Lovely :thumb :thumb.

It is, of course, a reed-valve two stroke with a diaphragm carburettor (like a chainsaw) :augie.

Model aircraft have certainly come on since I was making them. I saw a vid recently showing a model Junkers JU52 with three five-cylinder radial motors - awesome :drool.

Somewhere in the loft I have a 1cc 'AM10' (diesel), a 0.8cc 'Cox Golden Bee' and a 0.20cc 'Cox Pee-Wee' - The Cox motors are Glow-plug engines.

5.5 bhp would represent a very large model.

Far too many interests and unfinished projects already so I'll just stick to my R/C helicopter :D.

I fancy this one :)

I've got an example of almost every Cox engine made, including a Space Hopper, most are mint boxed :)
Also got 3 Ollys, the best 2.5 cc diesel engines ever made.
Plus around 200 other small engines....
Favourite model is a 60's freeflight biplane 12" wingspan powered by a 21,000 rpm :O .010 Cox ... see if I can find a pic :)

I've always fancied an R/C helicopter, but I'm told they are a complete bastard to learn to fly, and very VERY expensive when they crash, and if it was owned by me it WOULD eventually crash......

:soapbox:

That's some motor Proff .

Unless I'm missing something; flat twin two-strokes are actually "split singles" as they share a common crankcase and both pots fire at the same time - like a Velocette Viceroy scooter.

That 222cc motor is two split singles with the crankcases divided - and two carbs feeding them.

I used to buy the Kiel Kraft rubber-powered kits and fit the 020 Cox to them. I made (amongst others) an SE5A (WWI biplane fighter - the Scout Experimental) and one that looked a bit like a Westland Lysander that's name escapes me. I have fuzzy B&W pics somewhere, I must scan them in :augie. They flew quite well - but glided like bricks :blast.

The best use for the Cox 020 was pylon mounted on a 40" glider (it was a 'pusher' as the motor would run in either direction being a reed-valve), free-flight at its best :thumb.

I did lose a couple of planes when the thermals got them :blast and using a fuse-based dethermaliser over a field of dry grass wasn't the best alternative :D.

Then I grew up and bought motorbikes . . . . . .

Mine is just a simple thing that my 'kids' bought me for my birthday a couple of years ago - a 'Shark S006G'.

Its a bit small for outdoor use as it heads off downwind like a train.

It also has about 8 mins battery time so I run out of power just as I'm trying to avoid the apple trees :blast.

Good fun though.

Those large petrol/diesel-powerd 'copters are awesome. I'd love one but as you say . . . expensive to repair.

I also live next to Edinburgh Airport so no high-flying model planes or kites here :augie.

Here you go Bob, little flyer in all her glory..
The other engines are a .40 [approx 8cc] OS four stroke and a 2.5cc Oliver Tiger, more commonly known as "Ollys"......

That's sweet Rob,
(and Proff I've never seen a four stroke model engine before).

It reminds me of a flat four, water cooled model areo engine that was made entirely from scratch. Including the spark plugs (not glow plugs) and the carburetor. It was only about 5" across by about 4" front to back. He made id in the early eighties for use in a large model plane. As I remember it, the little thing worked very well.

Or if it's a boxer

Your fancying, this 50cc yobbie from OS might suite. Great for that 1/3 scale clipped wing cub you've always fancied. Model aero engines have come along way in the last 15 years. And don't get me started on gas turbines, wow they are awesome, guy near us is building a big ass Apache attack Heli powered by two gas turbines and a rotor diameter of over 10 feet:eek:
