I´ve repaired my TKC80 today after suffering a sharp stone right through a knobbly. Seems to be holding pressure OK after 100 miles or so. I know the advice is to get a permanent repair ASAP or even a new tyre, but this isn´t possible where I am in southern Chile (Puerto Natales).

How long/far can I expect it to hold, and if it fails is it likely to go all of a sudden or slowly deflate? I could go to a bigger town (Punto Aranas) 150 miles away where I should be able to get a permanent repair but this is going involve missing places I want to go (Torres Del Paine NP). Or should I be OK for 300-400 miles or more? The wound was fairly large (first repair was unsuccesful) and in the centre of the tyre.

OK if tubed, you will have to keep the road crap outta there as it sounds like a big hole. The tyre carcass will most likely hold (keep you speed down) but you will need to try to prevent any ingress of foreign (abrasive) material between the tube & tyre.
Tubed tyres can deflate very quickly.........

Repaired a tubeless TK that got a 6" nail through it and never touched it again. No problems.

Depends how you repaired it, if it's using the BMW repair kit on a tubeless tyre then although you are suppossed to only go around 50mph and get a permanent repair done asap I do know of people who have gone thousands of miles on such repaired tyres and totally ignored the max speed recomendation without any problem. I note you had to have two attempts at the repair, if that means two plugs in one hole then I'd be reluctant to trust it very far.
If you are going to use it as is I'd try and get some ultraseal or similar goo just in case (probably not possible where you are) and keep a check on it whenever you stop.

PS Isn't there a car tyre place anywhere near, they could fix it properly.

Thanks.

Sorry I should have specified it was tubeless, I had assumed that the Tip-Top kit was only for tubeless. I only have one plug in the hole, I think on the first attempt I hadn't put enough glue inside the various fractures around the hole.

I have tried the only 2 car-tyre places in town and they both have said they cannpt repair tubless. I assume they fit a tube in a car tyre.

Thanks.

I think I'd trust to luck, I wouldn't think a plug blowing out of a max 4mm hole would deflate too quickly, so if the worst happens you should get a bit of notice. I would definitely not put a tube in it. If your going to be using very high speeds then I think I'd play safe, otherwise I'd just be watchful.

Thanks.

Dont like the sound of "fractures" one bit. Makes me think that what went through the tread was wide and the hole was torn round the edges.

Its one thing to repair a nail hole with a plug, its altogether different to rely on glue to hold a torn tread together.

Ian, my mistake, from your earlier description I assumed it had to be tubed. OK tubless then....get them to vulcanise a patch on the inside & take it easy...

I've repaired quite a few with the the same kit and left them until i changed the tyre(3-4000 mile) Never had a problem.

done thousands of miles on repaired tyres, now just use gloop or similar, never travel without it (and 2 CO2 canisters to reinflate). Not sure why the speed limit is in place - heat, c'force? - but usually forgotten after a few days.

Biggest problem to date has been tyre fitters compaining about the mess

good luck
