looking for some advice about tires..

Bought the bike in January with conti trail attack tires which have some meat left on them but the rear is starting to flat out in the centre.

We have a ferry to santander booked for june and we are riding back via the channel tunnel so around 1700km riding. wondering if the rear is going to last the distance with 2 up and full camping gear. is it worth replacing? also would it be best to do the front too?

what tires do you recommend? I have heard good things about the Michelin road pilot 3.

also where do you reccommend to get tires around harogate / leeds / york?

Thanks

I would replace them - you're more likely pick up a puncture even if the rear lasts the distance. IMO a pure road tyre is the way to go - also consider Roadsmart II

Put 1/2 bottle of Puncturesafe in the part worn tyre. Buy a new one while away if necessary and add the other half of the bottle.

Change the rear for another trail attack. Keep the old one. When the new one is finally knackered, put the old one back on :thumb2

That's my methodology too, easier if you change your own tyres though :thumb

Posted this from another section:

I have a set of PR3 Trails on my 1200GSA which I fitted after having some PR3's fitted on my K1100RS. Previously to this I was running Roadsmarts which I was very happy with. When I compare the rear PR3 Trail fitted to the GSA from those on the K11 the profile is very different. On the Trails its very flat across a big section of the rear tyre and then there's quite a steep drop off to the softer compound at the edge. On the standard PR3's the profile on the rear is very much more rounded. I guess they did this on the Trails to give a bigger footprint of the hard compound which on a fully loaded Adventure bike would equate to a better mileage. However, for me, I prefer the more rounded profile on the K bike as that gives a better linear change of angle in cornering. On the GSA it can feel like a partly squared off rear tyre from the moment its newly fitted and for me doesn't inspire confidence when cornering hard. So for me, it will be back to Roadsmarts next time as its grip over longevity everytime.

Just to add to the above, I do find the wet grip of the PR3's excellent on both bikes - I guess I'm not cornering as hard in the wet to notice the same as I do in the dry.

You don't say how much tread you have left and Trail Attacks have approx 9mm on them when they are new

I've got TA's on my GSA and bank on getting around 10500 miles out of a rear :thumby:

That's good mileage Paul.

I just got some new Battlewings fitted today and got a fucking nail through the rear on the way home

Had some Michelin pilot road 3 adventure sports fitted last month at Ian Brown tyres in Malton 01653 690300, fitted to loose wheels was £182.
I've used him for years and always got good service/price.
Covered 1800 miles on them now & they're superb. As I don't plan off roading I'll not bother with the soft road tyres again.

there is about 3mm at the shallowest part in the centre of the tread..

Never heard of that variant...........

Can you post a link to them - all I can find are the regular Pilot Road 3.

MICHELIN PILOT ROAD 3 ADVENTURE SPORT

I always go to Bike Tyres Leeds with loose wheels.
PR3's £206.

They are currently doing an offer of a £30 fuel voucher from Michelin if you buy a pair
and
if you do 3000 miles within 3 months of fitting a pair of these, they will give you 1/3 off the next set.
