Does any of you good folk on here know how accurate the tyre pressure monitors are?

I ask, as i bought an analogue pressure gauge ( as recommended by Car magazine or similar?) for checking my pressures when cold. The guage says 36 front, 42 rear, but when i ride and check the on board figures thay appear to be reading high.....and yes i know they will go up a few lbs when warm, but 40 front and 46 rear seems a touch high????

Thanks

Richie

Take a read of the info in the bike handbook for more insight.

I have a number of tyre pressure gauges and no two of them give the same readings.

[Update] Having just re-read my handbook, I interpret the wording to mean the display shows what the pressure would be at an ambient temperature of 20C. :nenau

If they are that far out have them checked at your main dealer. Mine consistently read low and were replaced under warranty..

Have you tried using your analogue gauge when they're warm ?
But that does seem like quite a difference.
Best bet is to try a mates gauge too.

The pressures can rise that much with temperature, depending on load and sustained speed,
The 20 degree base line for the recommended pressures is a guide,
There will be a bit either side with a low reading at 5 c balancing out when running,
Therefore setting to specified pressures at 5 c will see a higher running temp,
So with such a high warmed pressure try dropping them so they dont run so high, but might read low when cold in winter,
40/46 peak running in summer is likeley but is a bit hard for this weather , nothing wrong exploring what suits,
at least you can verify the tpm and adjust accordingly to what feels best as a running setting,
