Deserts are tough
Kdt,
Im just replacing my rear tyre, I pick it up tomorrow. Ive ordered a continental TKC 80. I want to compare it to the Karoo. My Karoo has lasted 4200 km. But I did lots of wheelies and also high speed (autobahn) travelling.
Its no good offroad anymore, but onroad could probably last another 1000km
Im swapping it because that sort of mileage sucks. The Karoo is not a bad tyre, its sticky, predicatable on the curves on the asphalt ( a little dodgy in the wet), but unless you try different tyres you will never know which tyre is the best!
So, coming to the Desert. The Desert is the best "general" offroad tyre I have ever used. The mileage is phenomenal, its almost bulletproff, but you get that with penalties. Its absolutely shit in the wet. Its scary on the road in corners.
But your unlikely to get a puncture, and the offroad grip is pretty damm good.
I travelled thru Africa with Deserts (from North -> South).
If I were to do it again, I'd use the same tyres. But to ride around London, and out to dirt tracks I reckon its not the right type. Ill let you know how the TKC 80 does.
