My Karoo tires are working very well on and off road but the rear is disolving very quickly. :( I've just recieved some spares but I would like to know what anyone has to say about the Michelin Desert of Dunlop D907.. Is there a 17" rear in the D907?

Deserts are tough

Kdt,

Im just replacing my rear tyre, I pick it up tomorrow. Ive ordered a continental TKC 80. I want to compare it to the Karoo. My Karoo has lasted 4200 km. But I did lots of wheelies and also high speed (autobahn) travelling.
Its no good offroad anymore, but onroad could probably last another 1000km

Im swapping it because that sort of mileage sucks. The Karoo is not a bad tyre, its sticky, predicatable on the curves on the asphalt ( a little dodgy in the wet), but unless you try different tyres you will never know which tyre is the best!

So, coming to the Desert. The Desert is the best "general" offroad tyre I have ever used. The mileage is phenomenal, its almost bulletproff, but you get that with penalties. Its absolutely shit in the wet. Its scary on the road in corners.
But your unlikely to get a puncture, and the offroad grip is pretty damm good.

I travelled thru Africa with Deserts (from North -> South).
If I were to do it again, I'd use the same tyres. But to ride around London, and out to dirt tracks I reckon its not the right type. Ill let you know how the TKC 80 does.

TKC 80

Thanks Karlz

Looking forward to your report on the TKC.. Are you running the Karoo on the front still?

Your input on the Desert is appreciated. I'm planning a trip down the Baja this Winter and would like them to last the whole trip.

Your Africa trip would be an experience :thumb

what about serious knobblies

Does anyone know which tyres the BMW HP2 team use for racing?

Yes I still have the Karoo on the front. It still looks like it will go another 4000kms.
On the african trip I had Deserts front and rear. The front didnt last long at all, whereas the rear lasted ages.

karooted

yes the karoo's are pretty rooted when it comes to km's but they are bloody good tyres.I have got as low as 1,000 km's on my gs1150 during a mad outback trip. To as high as 3,000 km's overall. My thing is u only have one life and these are safe tyres on road and dirt.
I was fortunate to do an advanced rider training course yesterday at oran park, outside sydney. It was pissing down with rain and all the other guys doing the course were on sports bikes and there were a couple of 12gs's there plus a couple of big tourers. My HP2 on karoos never looked like slipping in the wet and i had some guys remark what good traction i had in the corners. We learnt a lot of stuff about riding that i dont ever want to forget but i must say the karoos are great tyres. The desert rear is a good tyre to but the front is shit and will have your bike go nuts. The sahara are good front and back and stick very well and are a good alllround tyre. The tourance are a road tyre and crap for dirt.My opinions only and hope i didnt offend.
