Tkc80 or new tyres for road trip

Hi, I'm off on a 1200 mile road trip around the uk and my Dakar had tkc80's on it when I bought it which worked great on road. But, as the rear is starting to get lower I was wondering whether to replace both tyres with something more road based or just a new tkc80 on the rear. I don't go offroad as I've not learnt the skills for that yet.

Do the tkc80's add a lot of vibration or is it just as the Dakar is a single? Travelling 400 miles in one day did cause my hands to feel the vibration effect for a few minutes.

Any recent choices on tyres? I 'm currenty in the process it bring observed for my advanced riding and the tkc's hold the road well in the dry it seems, not sure of the wet as don't always honour much in the rain.

Not sure on what tyres are best for road (we always go for semi off road) but if your 100% not going off raod then id ditch the TKCs imho.

As Wookie says there's no point in having TKC's on if you're not going to use the bike off road. They do add quite a bit of vibration although it's still there with road tyres on. Michelin Anakees are a really good halfway tyre but for purely road use you're better off with some 100% road biased tyres.
 
Thanx. I've gone for a set of shakers this time as not sure where the road trip will take us. If it's all road then I'll go for pure road next time. I've read they are good in the wet and dry although wear faster than others. We are going to the lake and peak district so might get a chance to go offroad a bit, nothing too extreme though.

That should read annakees.
 
They do, was a bit disappointed at the little tread on the annakees today when picked it up, but it was very wet and even new they felt better than the tkc's on the road. Plus, my rear tkc is getting low after only just over 2000 miles :o/ the annakees should last longer.

I did notice a difference coming up our gravel drive though, the tkc's went straight, whereas the annakees weaved a bit but still felt confident.


So, I now have a good front and worn rear tyre (not completely gone as I was told about 1500 mile trip would be fine).

Anyone wants to make a sensible offer can have them rather than me just scrap them. That way someone gets a set of tkc's to try and I get some money towards my anakees.
 
Hi, I'll have a look at the weekend how to do it and also measure the tread left.
 
I did like them and the look, but wanted something that lasted a bit longer. I'll see how I get on with the annakees as I'm not planning to go off road.

Have a look around for Shinko tyres, specificall e705's. They are a great on/off road compromise without the extreme wear & vibration of the TKC80's & Karoo's. Far superior to the Anakees & so on off road & on gravel roads too, just put a new set on today (GSA) have over 8mm of tread on them...:rob
 
Sounds good.

Starting to think anakee2's were not the best option? Anyone got positive experience with these? It was a choice between another 2500 miles out of a tkc, 10,000 from a tourance which I read were a bit slippery or BMW said the annakee 2's were their recommendation for inbetween.

Forgot to mention, shinko is a korean company who bought out the Japanese Yokahama tooling & tyre designs. I got 2500 km's from my last Conti TKC80, they are too bloody expensive to only last that short a distance.
 
I've got the anakee 2 and they feel good on the road, but still being cautious on country roads near where i live and def up the muddy drive. The tkc's gave more confidence near where I live. I'll see how I get on with the anakees.
 
New rear anakee, trip round Norfolk coast, tear in new rear anakee, must have hit a sharp stone or glass!!! Maybe I should have kept to tkc's!!! If the tyre is ruined I'll be going back to tkc's......

Could be a nearly new anakee front for sale :o(

Anyone know if rear tyres can be repaired? It's not punctured but it's an opentear about 20mm long with small off shoots. It's quite deep too. Just don't want to risk it blowing out on me.
 
Shop told me it was ruined :( so just ordered another set of tkc80's. I rode 4 hours on them before at around 60-70 and no problems. I guess they will wear quicker than anakees etc but as I'm used to them I've gone back to them.
 
Just back from 1300 mile trip with local IAM group and still loads of tread left on tkc's, so will be keeping with the tkc's, they look good, handled dry, wet and all sorts of normal terrain and weather.

Spring is coming soon, so coming the time to buy new tyres. But I am hesitating:

Driving both off/ and on-road. Distancewise 70:30, timewise 40:60. Country roads are mainly sandy, but it comes with clay as well. Asphalt speed 100-120 kmh, country road 70-100 kmh, offroad - as it goes ;)

So the issue: was thinking about Scout K60, but comments aren't the best ones (vibration at low speed, unstable in turns). Sahara3 or TKC80 are popular, but should be quckly eaten by asphalt, just by their shape...

Needed: confident and stable ride (especially turning) on wet asphalt and country road, at least average off-road performance, reasonable asphalt lifetime.

What would you recommend? :confused:
