Last week I picked up an ‘09 GS off a forum member. It is due a service now (last one in May ‘17 and I’ve just rolled it past 6k in the last week) and so is booked in at Studleys in Dorchester for early June (first opening!). I’m going to put another 800miles on it before then so do I change the oil myself now or just leave it? It’s had full BMW up until now but at the mileage and age I’m going to go with alternative/Indy for now and Studleys seem well recommended.

If going for the self oil change where do people recommend for an oil filter and oil? Motorworks seem the main option when googled or will just a 15w40 semi synth be fine?

Thanks in advance,

T.

10/40 semi synthetic will be fine, you can use car oil as well as it has a dry clutch...or 15/40 or 20/50 , but I always stuck with 10/40

If it were mine and it had done 6k since the last change I'd do it ... 20 minute job for the oil and filter , while you're at it change the final drive oil ( not 10/40 though :D)

Thanks Bryn,

Final drive was done last year so I’m happier with that. I’ll have a look at oils - not sure what Ocean BMW stuck in there last year but good point on the 10w40. Where do you get your filters from?

Just order a mahle filter off eBay.... it will be about £10 and then any synthetic or semi synthetic 10/40 will do the job just fine, Halfords or Asda etc :thumb2 BMW dealer will charge through the roof if you get the oil from them ;)

How much does an engine cost ???

For all the time it takes, change oil and filter. I personally would use a good quality mineral oil rather than a semi synthetic, and due to it being an older air cooled engine with wider tolerances, 20-50 but other will have their own view's; shame they're wrong !

I'd also change the gearbox and fd oil too, I do it every oil change, what's a litre gear oil cost ?

Enjoy the bike.

Same as all dealers! On my 2007 Hilux which I’ve serviced for the last 3 years I just get oils from Eurocarparts as they usually have offers. I prefer to put a decent oil in whatever it is.

Interesting on the mineral oil vs semi-synth. I was going to search for some wisdom once I’ve checked last year’s invoice.

What oil do you stick in the final drive? I haven’t looked at that yet?

Castro syntrax 75/90 in the final drive... Plenty of info on here about how to do it :thumb

Cheers Bryn I’ll do some digging.

I presume an engine oil like this will be no issues:

Castrol Magnatec (A3/B4) Engine Oil - 10W-40 - 4ltr | Euro Car Parts

How do K&N oil filters stack up? Only ever really heard of their air filters? I like the idea of the nut on the bottom...unless it stops the bash plate going back on?!

This seems like a sensible enough package unless someone more informed can tell me other wise??!!

Look at this on eBay
BMW R 1200 GS 2009 Castrol K&N Oil Filter Kit

None at all, as long as it is a quality oil it doesn't matter that much.

Anything else is personal choice.

I normally use Mahle on the Hilux but that K&N looks interesting is it will fit with the bash plate? Any one tried one?

I bought Repsol Motorcycle Fully Synthetic 10W40 - 4 litres for £27 off Amazon this week for mine

I’ve heard the nut shears off to easily, stick to the Mahle filter as recomended previously. Oh and buy the correct tool to undo them.

Perfect - thanks. I’m sure the K&N could be removed traditionally but two votes for Mahle is enough!

Now whether to go fully or semi-synthetic??!!

Oil and filter ordered so a job for next week. Just need to find some copper bung washers now as everything on EBay seems to be fabric!

Pm me your address and I'll post you half a dozen copper washers :thumb

My air cooled Yamaha 900 making more power per cc than the Hexhead 1200 did 75,000 in my care and showed no visible wear on cam bearings never mind measurable wear. It ran on yobbo brand turbo diesel car engine spec oils.
My take from that is that fancy brands are snake oil.
And the clutch only slipped when it wore out suggesting that bike specific engine oils are also made from legless reptiles.
