Hmm interesting as the compound does look different from the 1250 pads , less sintered / copper coloured did discuss this with service but no reply as of yet .

Haven’t noticed any drag and at service 600 miles , they found the pad wear and check for brake drag and found none .They then said your a Beta Tester so you deserve it

Absolutely not a waste of time, mines never gone wrong and a real gift in the Alps, one of the reasons I hang on to my RT,
That’s what I thought when I bought my 1250, after years with my 2011 TC.
I was converted and used it a lot when stopped at lights or junctions, even when they weren’t on a gradient. 1st gear selection was silent and a smooth take off.
Being a short arse, it made it much more controllable on hilly junctions.
Sorry best thing ever ., along with the lowering suspension . Brilliant additions , the hill start is not intrusive at all. Like others say bloody useful.

We've done it for years, all my bikes are simple and without any gadgets
I hate the Hill Hold on my car/van - absolutely a PITA
as a short arse who sometimes needs to keep his right foot down if there is a slope or camber, I have learnt to do a hill start using the front brake alone. It's quite simple once you have the knack. I have ridden loan bikes with hill start and it works okay and I can see the attraction, especially for the short of leg. One possible problem is that if you become reliant on this device then you get out of practice with the traditional techniques.

Used to do that with my 2006 GS and it drove me mad with all the whizzing and sizzing from the servo. Could have done with hill hold back then.
I like hill hold too, But if I had to pay extra as an option I wouldn't have it. And if it was actually the cause of the brake wear problem i'd disable it for sure.
Don't use it in the car cos it leaves brake lights on, and I hate that, especially when the knob in front does it at night.

I don't have it on my current RS but did on my GSA. Can't say it's a got to have. I manage perfectly without it. Can see the attraction as a convenience for a fully laden tourer on a hill, especially two up but having managed for decades without it's not as useful to me as cruise or LED headlights.

No, you have your own particular answer which suits you. Others will differ because we all have different opinions (thank $DEITY).
Funny or sad I remember 11 years ago when the 1200GS-LC came out they were plagued with the same problem with premature rear brake wear…The bike looked not right , had really not more power than the 1200GS-TC until the 1250GS came out and solved all these problems…Hope history repeats itself 
As for the quick wearing copper free pads that are good for the environment and the pocket books of Brembo…
Go woke go broke…I have 28K miles on my 1250 and still more than 50 % left of my rear pads and even more on the front but that had to do that they changed the cheaper leaky Harley brakes from Hays for Brembos A heartfelt Thank You to all you brave Beta Testers letting the green bananas 
ripe in your hands…At least you save some money on gas as the fill up is not as painful as when the tank had a decent 24 liters…
