To save a battery

Some years ago I worked closely with a group of electrochemists and one colleague told me about a wrinkle used in the former USSR to save a battery which had shorted a cell due to sulphate build up. They just drainout all the acid and carefully rinse out the muck in the bottom of each cell with lots of tap water.

Three years or so ago the battery on my 916 started to cause problems and despite the Optimate treatment one day the voltage was down around 10+ volts. As the voltage was so low I thought that one cell could be shorted out, so I gave it the USSR treatment, refilled with fresh acid and recharged. To my surprise it was back to normal and finally expired only three weeks ago.

Not being ac/dc my understanding is incomplete, but it did work in that case, though not on another battery last year which had a lingering end at 11+ volts and could not be revived with that treatment.

I remember doing that 30 years ago with a 6v Ducati single battery. I can't remember if it worked or not, now......

There goes another shattered stereotype.

I thought 916 owners had pots of money and spared no expense on their love & joy.

Battery tightwads may wish to look at this website http://www.mztech.fsnet.co.uk/electrics/elc_edta.html

The website owner is an afficianado of shite old East European bikes and has a horde of bodges to minimise cash outlay.
