Off to Morocco on Sunday.

I have already packed puncture repair kits, tyre levers, pump and spare tubes, but I am still undecided if I should use "Slime" in my inner tubes or not.

If I use "Slime" and it doesn't work, I guess it is almost impossible to repair re-use the inner-tube.

Having never repaired a puncture on this bike, any ideas how difficult it is to break the tyre from the rim on a 650 Dakar ?

The front tyres are a doddle to do, the rear is a lot harder. I think it is because the side wall on the rear Trailwing is so stiff. I've heard that you can use the side stand of another bike to break the bead but I've only ever used a couple of G clamps and thats quite tricky. Get yourself some of those plastic rim guards as well as the rim is easily marked, failing that use some insulation tape instead.

There is also very little well in the wheel so it is difficult to remove the tyre with levers. So only lever a very small amount at a time as you are likely to bend the aluminium rim.

I would advise a dummy run first, since doing a couple of punctures on the rear tyre myself it seems easier each time to break the bead and remove the tyre.

Thanks for the tips - Already got the rim guards.

I'll make sure I only get punctures in the front tyre.

On another note, what happened to the Beaulieu thread ?

I posted that I would attend and represent the 650 fraternity, but now I can't find the thread !!!

Nick,
you can use your heel to break the bead on the rear tyre.
Work your way round every couple of inches putting full body weight on. You wont appear to be getting anywhere but on the third revolution the bead will break.
Your biggest problem will be lack of centrestand (unless you've fitted one yourself).

Good luck and enjoy your trip.........

Nick,

If you're going on the WOMBW trip, don't worry. Roy (Blue Sweeper) has a natty tool for breaking beads - that and my size 10 sidi couriers mean't it works a treat :D

Thanks Jon, but we are travelling independantly (me, Zmeagol, Shrek2 and Dfor).

I think we are on the same boat as the WOBMW trip though.

Maybe we will bump into you guys somewhere in Morocco.

- and the fleas from a thousand camels infest your arsehole!

Only kidding - have a great time....;)

To break a bead on any bike tyre try this it works.
With the wheel off get your tyre lever and push it in by the rim , then tap the lever with your hammer and listen (VIP) for change of the pitch when the lever is at the bottom of the well then lever the lever and work your way along, use 2 or 3 levers. I carry a cut down hammer to fit in my tool bag (the handel not the metal bit).
