Been thinking about getting Sat Nav for my bike but they are bloody expensive. I have built in Sat Nav in my car so it would only be for the bike and I can't bring myself to pay £300 + for one. Anyway I always managed fine before they came out and the Sat Nav in my car is crap. Always manages to send you the longest route witth the most amount of traffic and then finish your route by sending you down a track! I was in Bridlington the other day and programmed it for home. Nav said 229 miles and 5 hours driving. I managed 199 miles and 3h 45mins driving.

So can anybody recommend a decent tank bag for GS1200 which is not massive but allows you to have a map in top?

A pre-owned Garmin Quest and mounting kit should not set you back more than aprox £120 - Mapsource is your friend for selecting and uploading the route you want to ride

Oxford do a good mapcase for £15 - or source both for belt and braces reasurance

The last map-in-a-tank-bag I used has been in a Belgium ditch for about 10 years now - it blew off when I was gunning the bike to pass a car.

Garmin* sat-navs as pretty sophisticated. They will only send you the long way around if it really would be quicker or if you programmed the unit to do that!

Greg

*Can't speak for other brands as I've never used any

I don't use tank bags, but if I did i think it would be one of the SW Motech quicl lock ones that mount to the fuller cap. Possibly the powered one. That looks handy.

I have the SW Motech tank bag. Great piece of kit and cheaper than the BWM one :thumb2

Tank bag fopr the GS

On my previous Gs I had the original BMW bag which was pretty good but a devil to get on and off -particularly irritating at the petrol pumps; On my 2008 model I fitted the Bagster unit Medea (4879) 22 to 34 litres. This involves a neat tank cover (which fits really well) and the large rucksack type bag which has a good map pocket;it is very easily detached from the bike or can be flipped forward to fill the tank if in a hurry.; I would recommend this .

Err, latest price I saw on a Zumo 400 was £165, which gives full UK/Eire and major world roads (major roads around the world?, world roads around the major??) and very happy we have been together for the last nine months.
I have a TT tank bag with detachable A4 map top - good kit.
:mmmm

Stop being tight and buy a sat nav. There`s nothing worse than pissing about with a map trying to find out where you are and remembering a route to where you want to go.
Buy a 2nd hand BMW tankbag as they`re the best, theres a bit of a knack to getting them on but after knowing that it`s dead easy. One of the best things I bought for my bike :thumb2

If the tank bag is any good .. you'd be too tight to buy it :D

So why not just goto Aldi/Lidl and see if they have the cheap ones left :thumb2

Not that tight!!!! I quite fancy learning the art of map reading again as well as feeling the money is to much. Anyway the Garman somebody suggested looks better value,

If you like to use a map buy a cheap etrex and use it to confirm your posistion an pick yur own rout on the map.

For a a cheap GPS try using Telmap on your Blackberry

Why DO YOU want a sat nav? Do YOU NEED one?
I can think of only few reasons for them e.g fuel station when in the middle of nowhere with low fuel. Far to many people rely on them even for going to the corner shop.

Since when has "need" been a prerequisite to buying something? :nenau
I better give my bike back.:eek

I agree, I have young drivers that work for me that can't find the gate out of the yard without TOMTOMTOMTOMTOM. The older boys never both with it and never seem to get half as lost.

Sat nav is a navigational aid.
Used as such it is as helpful as a map.

Used as the be all and end all it will get you into trouble in no time.

A bit of common sense and some basic navigational knowledge will keep you on the straight and narrow tho.

I love maps and plan most of my rides on them. I plot it on mapsource and load it onto the Zumo. I hardly look at the screen most of the time, but on the odd junction where my memory fails me a quick glance gets me going again in seconds few rather than pissing about taking gloves off, removing maps and turning to the right page and soaking them in the process etc.

The zumo also comes into it's own when exploring new areas too. Just ride where you like and when you have had enough set a destination and off you go...

Maps are great, but sat nav's can be too.

I have a FAMSA tankbag (which has a map pocket in the top)
I bought it for my 2005 1200GS, and have used it twice since.

I have now updated the bike (2008 1200GSA) so the tankbag will be up for sale. £70 to first PM that I get !.
