Told BMW 1200 Panniers Leak - By BMW

A word to the wise:

The thread has been an interesting and worthwhile discussion on the merits/faults as seen by users of the MBW system panniers.

If it continues sliding into a personal/dealer slanging match I'll chop it :thumb

PS I've had the sytem panniers from new (2 years) and rode the infamous tossers in the Baltic tour of 2005 when a snorkel and fins were absolute necessities. They never let a drop in. The only time the top box has leaked was when it was submerged in some god-forsaken ford in dorset :spitfire

PPS I have the mane Event liners which have performed very well indeed.

How much, may I ask, did you pay for yours?

I have just been quoted the RRP, but wondered if they can be had for a bit less.

£400 - two side panniers, not the top box - with the liners, the locks and everything.

Vario panniers

I would think that enough has been written to convince most of us that in normal (unsubmerged) use these panniers do not leak. Mine are dry after two years all year round use. However whilst on this subject it is worth checking the adjustment of the bolt attaching each pannier. One came loose and a pannier went down the road when loaded exactly to capacity (10 litres of Côte du Rhône) - very little damage and no (wine) leakage. I have adjusted them so as to be a tight fit to get into place and I ALWAYS check that they are firmly fixed.

Even Submarines leak, FFS.... And they cost trillions, so a wee bit of water in a pannier ain't much to complain about, now is it.......Buy the inner bags, or get the cheapo versions, M&S Cool Bags, excellent, and carry about 35 litres of clobber, Tremendous.....

That's some price! Is that an online price or from your dealer?

I don't know if this is any use to you all,but in my books (regardless of whether you're buying jackets, gloves boots, tents or anything else for that matter) there are only two lines that you ever need to hear, and they are:-

1 Waterproof

2 Not waterproof

There is absolutley no middle ground at all. Shower proof is used by two groups of people, those who think it's waterproof, and it's not,and those who don't think it's waterproof, and it sort of is.

Well said!

Tankyou very much for sharing that. I have been quoted £560 from my local dealer, which seems too much. May I possibly ask whether that was just a straight purchase price (i.e. not along with a new £9k bike) from a main dealer, and how you got it so low?

If you do not want to quote it on here, I am on public dot email at virgin.net

And thanks again.

That was the dealer price - I was amazed too - but I think he's trying to sweeten me up to buy an F800ST for Mrs J when that good lady gets her Direct Access.

He also wants to sell me the sat nav for my GS but I want to see how much he knocks off that before I go for it.

I was a dick and listened to all the bad press Hursts got online so went to Scotland. I will refrain from saying where just in case I have to bring the thing back!

Mark sold me my bike and was really nice to deal with and still makes time to chew the fat anytime I call. Alan is also a top bloke who has seen me right with anything I've bought. Billy McC is brilliant and a true friend who I've known for over 20 years now. I could go on, but your experiance bears no resemblence to mine. Oh, and I've only ever had Jap bikes up to buying the GS.

I don't mean for this to read like a kiss-ass session. I'm just relaying my dealings with the firm.

OOPs Should have said, didn't buy bike in Belfast!! Thought I'd be clever and go elsewhere. That's what you get for being a smart arse. Still know next time.

some of yours pm

Mine leak........... :(

Well, interesting as this thread is, I'd just like to offer a full apology to BMW et all. I said my panniers were leaky. I have to admit that that was more than likely my fault when I pressure hosed them. :o The reason I now accept their waterproofness was a 250 mile run through Scotland on Tuesday. It rained non stop for the whole journey from Troon to Aberlour and not one drop did the panniers let in. Finding this out after buying the inner bags was a sort of irony I guess, tho' I'm well pleased with the inner bags as I didn't have to hump the panniers into any of the B&B's we stayed in. :)

feck... i missed all this

You didn't miss much!LOL

I ran foul of a couple of idiots on this thread. I did get a lot of good info, for which I'm grateful. Just so we all know I would always try to NOT embarrass any dealer or anyone who works there just because I got them on a bad day.
That's called manners! I certainly don't blame the dealers for the product they're given to sell, how can they be held responsible for the panniers they are supplied?
Thankfully it has become clear through the sensible contributors to the thread that there really is no such thing as completely waterproof panniers. In conclusion it's as the guy at the dealers told me; some panniers will never let in and some will, it's just the luck of the draw.
One things for sure I'm not gonna let the negative that's come my way deter me from continuing to post onto this site.
