hi folks, can anyone please throw some light on a toll in my tool kit,it about five and a half inches long is hollow and slightly shaped at either end,what on earth is it for.

Perhaps a photograph would help, maybe even looking in the handbook?

Without more of a description I'd assume its the piece thats used for slipping over the end of some of the other tools to add leverage

it says nothing in the handbook,its about 5mm in diameter,its kinda slightly flattened at either end ,one end is ever so slightly larger than the other.

Sounds like either:
Item 1 - extension for hook wrench (C spanner) for adjusting the spring preload on your front suspension
or item 3 - extension for screwdriver blade which helps you adjust the damping on your rear shock.
