TT rider V2 great bit of kit...

I've had mine for three years, it's been used regularly on the bikes in all weathers, it's used every day in a car when I'm at work. You must be unlucky, I've had no problems.

My TomTom Rider has been round the whole of Europe except for Spain (next year) and in total has done around 25,000 miles and counting. Tar'in them all with your brush is not representative of the products quality and I dont have a issue with Customer Service and I work for them.
you seem to be the one to talk to - being an employee and obviously in the know :augie ok here i go - i have never used satnav in my puff preferring to use Michelin maps and suchlike - yes i occasionally get lost though i emphasize occasionally - i am however becoming lazy and was pondering the purchase of a satnav device - i have come across tom tom rider v.2 europe second edition priced £323.15 - linky - http://www.mynewcheap.co.uk/products/details/tomtom-rider-v2-europe-2nd-edition/10649/ - in your honest opinion would this device suit my requirements - i mainly ride in the UK with maybe a couple of european trips per annum - i feel the main requirements would be ease of set up - ease of use - easy updates - what do you reckon

:thumb2 Much better routing and more user friendly than the Garming Nuvi, 2610 and 2810 in my experience - great piece of kit :clap

I had a TT Rider 1 - It drilled through the contacts, which meant I had to pay for a Touratwat mount for it - However that was the only problem in 3 years of extensive use.

I changed to a Garmin Zumo 550 - Which is OK - It does the job, however the mapping and route calculations and far better IMHO on the TomTom - So next time, it will be a TomTom again for me :)

Rider 2

I have a tomtom, after 2 problems they sent me a new one. The service is spot on i am very happy with mine. :thumb

to anyone thinking of buying tom tom rider v2 your money will be better spent buying a very large bag of sweets,i have had mine for two years and wished i had never heard of this company there customer services are the worst i have ever experienced in my life and i am 57 yrs old the unit never works when i actually need it to it has been back several times and takes ages to be returned i have asked for my money back but get no reply i have spent hours and hours on the internet /phone trying to resolve several problems all to no avail now i cannot even update my unit as tom tom home will not down load onto my computer i have had two computer guys look at this, as tom tom cannot fix it after 2 hours on the phone /computer ,the guys told me the problem is with tom toms programme and a lot of people are having the same problems so if you want to be driven insane buy a tom tom :blast

do you want to sell it?:augie

Never had a prob with TT, always found their customer services to be very good. I had a prob last week with new maps, phoned them ...sorted out in 2 mins...

I once had an crappy burger from McD, it doesn't mean they are all shite!!!!

Ok it does...............but you know what I mean :comfort

Isn't it weird how different peoples experiences are...

It just depends on who you get at the end of the phone, at the call centre, and whether they really want to help.

I've had a Rider 2 which performed faultlessly... :thumb

The TomTom helpline has been good on the occasions I've called with problems.

Now I use a variety of Garmins (2610 & 2820 on the bike, plus Streetpilot 7200 in the car).

I have to say that the whole Garmin/Mapsource experience (don't talk to me about unlock codes :rob) is hard going at times, but can be strangely satisfying too :augie

However the clincher for me is Garmin customer service, which is usually brilliant, to the extent of sending me personally burned discs of mapping that I've lost, authorising free mapping upgrades that I don't really deserve... and solving what are to me complex problems...

So my conclusion..?

Who knows :D

Think it clearly comes down to personal preference. I've used both on a bike and found the only real advantage I had with the Zumo was that I could track the route I had been freestyling on and viewed it later; something that the Tom Tom doesn't seem able to do. The top advantages I find with the Tom Tom are that the display seems clearer, refreshes more swiftly and gives more acurate routing; as long as you keep it updated!

My only problems surrounded the Version 1 Rider as I sufferred the typical problems of connection failure due to the mounting design. Version 2 has been faultless both at work and play is extremes of heat 48deg in the sun in France to -15deg in the UK.

My colleague had a mega smash which wrote the bike off, wrote the offending car off, pushes that into another and threw him 15 feet through the air. once I checked he was all right, I just unclipped the Rider and it's in use on a new bike now - robust? -I think so!

Given a free choice I would buy Tom Tom again
:)

Yep, i have had one for two years and it been great to, guess you must have had a duff one. Bad luck dood !!

Had my Rider V2 for 1 day with UK & Ireland maps, worked fine.
The first night I took it indoors and tried to back it up, error found so wouldn't complete. I next tried updating the unit which resulted in no maps found and no support from TomTom.
Xmas eve I wrongly thought after reading several forums to purchase a new set of maps (Western Europe) costing nearly £40.00 only to find that a larger SD card is required, so a trip to the local Tesco's to buy a 4GB SD card. I then followed the accompanying instructions, 5 hours to download under 2GB of maps to the device. Customer service has been very spasmodic, 2 e-mail replies yesterday 1 at 05:19 & 1 at 11:29 from the same agent saying to try more or less the same instructions. Reformatting the SD card took 2 1/2 hours & another 3 to reload the maps. I've re-e-mailed the support but won't expect an answer till the early hours tomorrow.
The Rider when switched On unconnected to the PC flash's the TomTom logo, reads the SD card, and again flash's the TomTom logo before switching Off.

The Rider when switched On connected to the PC flash's the TomTom logo, reads the SD card and starts TomTom Home programme on the PC, where you can add voices and see whats on the card but not a lot else.

A very disillusioned TomTom 1day user, I should of stuck with my reliable Zumo 550, just short of bike mounts at present.

PS has anyone got a screen view as to what should be on the TomTom SD card with Western Europe maps ?

Solution

Now all sorted !

I managed to fully Format a 2GB SD card and then load all the files onto it via the TomTom Home 2 programme and as by magic the TTR2 started preforming properly. Next I copied the 2GB SD card onto my hard drive as "TomBackup" then fully re-formatted the 4GB SD card before copying the "TomBackup" onto it. The 4GB SD card now does work satisfactorily now.

Note: I have also managed to repair the TTRider V2 mount where the contact pins had had the minute springs dissolve too nothing giving no contact with the main unit.
This was achieved by taking the mount apart and removing the exposed contact pins and spring left overs, replacing the old pins with short lengths of solid copper wire, which were trimmed to length once reassembled.
Not ideal but seems to work.
