I saw the advert on Nippys site, but IMHO it doesn't look as robust as the Tonkatech item for the TT Rider.

Having said that, I haven't yet bought anything from Wunderlich that I haven't been very impressed with, especially my steering stops for my 1200 (much better than the sheet metal Tonkatech affair a mate had on his 1150 Adv IMHO).

Let us know how it fares Yonkyo.

Hello ther, I'm actually an FJR 1300 owner who was thinking of getting a Rider, but was directed to your site from the FJR Forum. I wrote to Tom Tom asking if they planned to introduce a stronger mount in view of the large number of failures and, to my surprise, have received a very prompt reply, which may interest some of you.

"A very small number of TomTom RIDER users have experienced difficulties with the device and its mount. As the numbers affected are so small in the context of the total number of RIDERs sold, we deal with such issues on a case by case basis.

To date there has been no announcements made regarding a re-design of the RIDER mount or indeed of a successor to the RIDER.
However, TomTom is an innovative company operating in a fast-moving market and so it is quite likely that new TomTom motorbike products will be launched later this year."

So there you have it!

Sent my TTR back a week ago: recieved this email last weekend: does it mean TomTom are refusing to repair the unit? Or am I jumping the gun? I have just had another email stating the unit is being returned. Anyone had a similar response?

Your service request has been cancelled by TomTom:
TomTom Rider Device (without SD) [H]
TomTom Rider Docking Shoe [M]

I heard the other day that tom tom have pulled the rider.I don't know if this is true, but it came from the place I got my 2610 from. My mate bought a 2610, struggled to get to grips with the software and wanted to send it back for a rider. I told him of the issues noted on the site concerning the rider which he discussed with ( GPS warehouse I think) and so has kept the 2610 and i've given him lessons how to operate the thing. They told him the rider was being pulled.

I've returned my second TT Rider back to Fife service centre today due to the charging problem.

...

7,000 miles later, my replacement unit has packed up charging on bike due to the cradle issue, so the Rider & cradle are on their way back to TT. I'm expecting an additional bunfight, as of course I couldn't find the receipt so I've not included the required proof of purchase - watch this space...

...

I didn't have any correspondence, email etc from TomTom at all after I sent it in, but it arrived back from them yesterday - without any covering letter explaining what's been done at all.

It's the same TTR unit, but looks to have had shiny new contacts inserted in the rear. The cradle I sent in has been replaced with a whole new boxed 'Additional Mounting Kit'.

Basically everything is repaired now, but it'd only be a matter of time til I'm back at square one. I'm going to check used prices on eBay, then see if I can get some money back on it towards a Zumo now ...

Update
Just had a new unit and cradle delivered from TomTom. I intend to mount the cradle in a stronger aftermarket mount and, hopefully, I won't have any more problems.

Forget the Halfords "Customer Services" email address. I have now sent four since my original in January and each time all I get is an automated response saying they will get back to me within 7 days. Their customer service!!! is no better than Tomtom.

At a local level the store manager has been told to expect six new cradles with a "security strap" sometime. One of them is mine if it ever arrives.

I hope BBC "Watchdog" takes up the invitation to investigate the Tomtom rider saga, not because I think it would have any effect on Tomtom but Julia Bradbury might want to come for a ride on my GS, for research purposes of course, and she must have the most gorgeous legs on TV.

PS the above is another fantasy of mine just like the possibility I might get a fully functioning well designed cradle from Tomtom.

Hi Pepy, bad luck breaking that Tomtom bracket, do you mean the Touratech bracket is now for sale or that you just need a new Tomtom bracket??

The power of this site. Within days of posting I have received the following from Halfords

Thank you for your e mail and please let me start apologising for the delay
in our response.

we are very sorry that this matter has taken such a long time to come to a
conclusion but as the TomTom Rider is an obsolete product it has been quite
difficult to search for a replacement mounting kit.
We have however finally located one and we will be glad to post it to you
as soon as possible if you wish to forward your full address to us.

Once again please accept our most sincere apologies for any inconvenience
caused by this situation.

Kind Regards

Nice to know they just sold me a broken obsolete product. Somebody may want to open a book on whether the mount will be broken when it arrives!!!

Have a look at the link. :type

I have the Touratech bracket fitted to my bike now. It's the lockable version at £75.00 but the unit is now rock solid. :thumb

Another option - anyone seen one of these? I found it on the Nippy Normans site whilst looking for some other bits - also a lot cheaper than the Touratech item at £40-ish:

Still waiting for mine, they must be a popular siolution as they are on back order, Norman assures me they are getting stock today (22/02/07). Not going to use my TomTom until I get one.

I broke my original mount, the front split away from the back. Luckily a mate gave me his unused mount as his TomTom unit itself failed to turn on so he got a full refund.

There is a difference between the mount I sent back and the new one. The new mount is marked on the base as Made in China 4K00.003.2 and shows the model as Ton Tom Rider Holder II. Whe you compare the back of the new one with an old one there are additional plastic reinforcements just below the hinge for the black clamp. It also appears to have a much thinner rubber seal showing between the front and back of the unit. Whether this will make a difference remains to be seen. Photos below of old and new mounts

I think the most telling indication is "Made in China"...
Everything made in China is cheap shit.

Wunderlich holder?

Anyone wondering what the Wunderlich anti tamper holder is like? So was I so I ordered one from NippyNormans (fantastic service btw).

Fitted the holder in less than 5 mins and I can tell you that it clamps the TomTom into the existing mount very firmly - there is no play or room for movement caused by vibration and absolutely no chance of your TomTom jumping out of the cradle.

Here is a link:

Highly recommended. Derek.

Hi Derek,

How do you attach the wunderlich holder to your bike? I'm asking as I'm thinking of getting one.

I've just recieved a new cradle from Tom Tom after the orginal fell apart. I used a RAM mount attached th the oval bar behind the clocks. Can this be used with the wunderlich holder?

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul.

I'm still using the original mounting kit that came with my TomTom. The Wunderlich holder is fitted between the original cradle and the part that it bolts to (the metal plate with the ball on it). If the RAM mount uses both of the original parts then I imagine you should have no problems.

Hope this helps, Derek.

Yes it can, I have the same outfit myself.
The Wunderlich kit sorts the problem.
