broken cradle

I was reading this forum for advice on fitting a new TT rider and of course went to check that the unit did not move about too much in the cradle. In fact it moved quite a lot. On checking the cradle I found stress marks leading from one of the screw holes on the same face of the cradle as the pins. It was the torx security screw in the top left hand corner of the unit. In fact looking at the recessed screw head showed the plastic was cracked in the shoulder of the screw hole. (sorry for the long winded description, the site won't let me post photos).

I took the unit back to the retailer who offered to replace it with a cradle from another unit. When he opened the box it was broken in the same place. Only one other unit left in the shop and, yes you've guessed, it was broken too although it was worse in the there were fractures round 3 of the screws.

Now waiting for a replacement from TT. The retailer was not impressed with the concern shown by the TT service centre when he called to get replacements for the broken cradles in his stock.

The unit works great in the car by the way and if they can get the cradle problems sorted I think they would have a winner. If they don't do something soon they risk getting a brilliant GPS rubished for the want of a poorly designed cradle.

Come on TT what about a product recall and a re-designed cradle to show that your engineering skills can match your electronics wizzardry.

if you read my other posts about the rider, you'll see i asked for a refund from tomtom...they couldn't, as i bought it from globalpositioningsystems...well, globalpositioningsystems took one read of my comments and tt's repsonses and offered me a partial refund....

now bearing in mind i bought it in feb this year at £544, and only highlighted the problem in aug as i only used it on the bike then, i was refunded £470...now that is a result all right...at least the retailers sympathise with us.

Good to meet you Lindsay,
As you asked here is the photo of your cracked mount.

Just checked my cradle after reading BENNYSDAD`s post, low and behold i have exactly the same damage to my cradle. Could this be the cause of all the vibration problems?

Will Tom Tom allow me to return just the damaged cradle?

TT Rider fault and TT Fix

OK,

Back to the origional thread issue and I thought you may like to hear where my ongoing discussions with TT have arrived at. I must say at this point that these have been some what slow to say the least.

Anyway I am now at the point where I have a new cradle and a new mother board fitted, however after all this I went out on a test run only to find the unit powering on and off again. I went back to TT .

I went through to the help desk and got a chap called Ben ( Very keen and helpful which is a firdt for TT) Ben went off and checked some things out then came back to me and suggested the following

1 Update to 6.5 TTR Now done. He assures me that this has fixes in the software help smooth the power draw and hence helps eradicate the fluctuating power flow???

2. Get a BMW part called a canbus cable… Apparently this will also help solve the problem.

I have to find out what this BMW cable is and what it does …and hoped some of you guys / gals may know..

Also wondered what your thoughts on the solutions offered may be.

Only became a member to help you out with this.
A lot of people are following this thread and your dealings with TomTom regarding the Rider.
This thread is being talked about in 4 different forums that I know about :thumb

Regarding the BMW Cable.
Try this link and it will explain all (hopefully)

Good luck with it :)

The Wonders of the TT Rider

I have more materials now to make some more of the straps now so will have to try and pull my finger out and get making them.

Egon Hi I have just joined this site after reading through the thread relating to the crap TT Rider to which I am the "lucky owner"!

I bought my TTR at the end of May used it twice for a total of approx 4000 miles until it was totally unusable. I sent it back first week September and finally got a new unit and cradle after returning mine un-fixed three times 2nd week December (Excellent customer service? - Not a recognised fault blah blah blah etc?). Oh my am I P***ed off at TomTom and now after reading all enclosed on this forum I guess I had better not get my hopes up for the new unit.

That said your fixing strap looks great, is it possible for me to purchase one from you ASAP as I intend riding my bike too Tuscany last week January.

If you can supply one, my email is [email protected] please let me know how I can you etc (online bank transaction, cheque, paypal what ever suits)

Thanks
John

Garmin !!!!!! Used this make since early 90s..on boats / cars & Bikes Never a problem And any ?????? helpfully answered !! Mike

My TTR is being returned in the next week or so because of the charging problem :(

Has anyone had TT do a repair they are satisfied with? Reading this thread there doen't appear to be? Just like to know what to expect.

1) The charging problem is due to vibration.
2) The vibration is caused by the ineffective TomTom mount.
3) The solution is to use a better mount made by Touratech.

Why are you guys still buying TT. If you Know of poor sevice would you keep going back hopeing one day it might get better. They spend £00000? trying to get your custom and when they have got it don't give a f---. 2 + 2 = 5? .
:stopbeing :bash :bash :bash :bash

Thank's for summing it up Pukmeister. I find the TTR does everything I want but is spoilt by the cradle design fault.

I know we shouldn't have to, but looks like I will be buying a Touratech mount to prevent the problem in future.

On 2nd Moount as well

I found the mount cracked on both the front top screws causing the contacts to miss the pins. Sent the mount back direct to Amsterdam who passed it to their support unit who sent me a replacement. No problems yet with this one but will surely have soon as agree absolutely that the design is seriously flawed.
My mate has been going through hell with his unit cutting out and, although his is not cracked like mine, a new unit has solved the poroblem. (I bought a spare when I returned my broken one so I could still use the unit so extra £29spent that shouldn't have been necessary) He will be returning his mount for a replacement via the same route I did.
I will say that TT have always been polite and I have also found that they will continue to help and try different things to cure a fault.
I bought the latest Western European maps via download but could not download the last .7mb out of 903.7MB. After four goes and over 20 hours downloading I sent the SD card to Amsterdam and they loaded it for me and it works really well now. One of the new features has the speed limit displayed for a lot of the major roads now with your speed next to it. If you go faster than the limit it turns red to warn you. Not 100% accurate but great if you have forgotten whether it was a 40 or 50 limit.
I find the unit very good at what it does and it is really only the mount that lets it down. I have noticed that very few outlets are offering the Rider now and even the TT site only has the Rider local at £249 with the Europe version not on the site at all. Let's hope that they can crack this as the unit is easily as good as anything else on the market.

TomTom Rider Holder Faults

Hi there, new to the forum and a brand new TT Rider for Christmas from halfords (£249.99) for my GSA. On opening the sealed box found the holder to be cracked around 3 of the screw recesses, looks like they have been over tightened on assembly. Took in back to halfords and found two others in stock also with the same damage. Phoned TomTom and they are not aware of any KNOWN problems with the TT Rider. They advised that as my TTR was under 28 days old the retailer should replace my damaged product. Well p"*"
off now! waiting to hear from the halfords manager.:(

MY TTR sits in a drawer now, dented on all 4 corners where it fell out of the mount:spitfire Have to say though, sturdy bit of kit, 'cos it worked as soon as I put it back in the mount coupled to a makeshift lanyard (now supplied by TomTom for obvious reasons). Actually bought one of Steve's straps which I will use if I am forced to use the TTR in an emergency. As for TomTom's customer service, it stinks and I will NEVER buy another product from them, and will advise everyone I can to avoid them like the plague. :rob

New Zumo on the bike now, can't say how it will compare in use, but at least I start from a point where I know I can get good service if a problem occurs.

TT Rider Faults...

Hello all,

was contacted today by my local halfords manager, and was told he had spoken with TomTom and that they would be sending out a new mount/holder for my TT rider. Still not acknowledging that a KNOW FAULT exists, therefore I don't know if it is an upgraded product. Will advise further in 10-14 days (expected delivery). :(

Cheers
Andy :)

As globalpositioningsystems.com gave me a refund on my Rider after reading all my emails to Tomtom, i have a brand new (opened though) Touratech mount for the rider. £40 + p&p.

By the way, it works, and the Rider doesnt move at all.

Ps apologies in advance if i'm not allowed to post this in this section.
