Tomorrow…….

wrapping up now in Verdun … two days of WW1 stuff then head home Saturday….

Apologies for the lack of photos / views/ bikes etc …. When solo I hop off take a photo and go!!

With the special one - stopping is a major incident normally involving him removing all his kit as too hot …. Therefore each stop needs to be 45 mins!!!!

Anyway I’ve enjoyed myself - ridden over 1200 miles - seen some lovely views and had a few sweaty moments in the hairpins !!!

I’ll send three rings when safely home . Till then….image.jpg

He’s laughed a lot. Which makes a change from his normal sour face… so that means something!!

He’s struggled with the heat - and we have kept all our gear on - seeing lots of riders in tee shirts … me I would ride in a tee shirt - but I’ll not compromise him…

The question is - would he go again….

You've given him an experience that not many Grandfathers could. He will ultimately decide. He will never forget the trip, though. I took my 'neurodivergent' middle son to RAF Fairford for the annual airshow on the GS from The Smoke. He was a great pillion. He loved the airshow and meeting my brother again. It was only weeks later that my wife told me that the bike scared him. I respected his courage to go back to London with me on it without saying a word!! I try not to overthink these things. I've done too much of it in my life. Your trip report was great and I appreciate that it's the last thing you want to do at the end of a challenging day.

Patrick pretty much ticks every box - partially sighted, albino, ADHD, Autism, we have all the Cards and he attends a special school part time….

He’s also very bright, frustrated and angry with the world / we have, I joked engaged with every service but the fire service - I know that time will come…..

He’s a complex character

I state from time to time that by 28 he will be in Prison, a Millionaire or both…..

All I try and do is show a path with a bit of fun from time to time.

Patrick is with me under a guardian ship order …

We do our best.

Sometimes, it’s good to be reminded what a lucky roll of the dice many (indeed, most) of us have enjoyed.

What would society do without people like you? Seriously. Max respect, brother. :beerjug:

When us grumpy old white men get on the ferry and whinge like bitches for two nights, it's very cathartic and highly enjoyable but I know that we (our group) are all genuinely grateful that the 'luck' portion of life gave most of us a wink. As my brother says, 'It's strange, the harder I work, the luckier I get'. I could not agree more, however, we don't all start from the same level playing field. I'm getting deep tonight. I blame the weather and alcohol combination.

If you want to see the ‘Best bits’ of Verdun over a couple of days, I’d suggest:

A. The Ossuary and watch the newly produced film, that tells the story of France’s epic battle, that still plays on the nation’s psyche.

B. The Butte de Vauqois, the vanished hilltop village which was blasted (quite literally) out of existence.

C. Fort de Vaux, possibly the most interesting of the several forts.

D. The main and very modern museum, very well presented.

F. The Voie Sacree memorial, for no other good reason than the road (Voie Sacree) fed men, animals and untold munitions into the charnel house.

Good recommedations, Richard. The French bleed the nation dry in The Great War defending their own territory. It's humbling to see. Just like the British sectors. I try not to judge the contribution of a generation by body count. We hardly get taught anything about the social impact of losing the male half of a whole generation. I have three relatives lying in graves in France and it's all been passed down to me by word of mouth. I'm putting the cork back in the bottle.
