Can anyone tell me why my Tomtom Rider turns itself on after manually being turned off after a run.
The tt is wired to the accessory socket under the seat.
The tt will stay off, if the bike has "timed out" (hazard light button goes out). But will continue to turn itself back on during this "time out" period.
The tt powers itself up normally when the bike is started. Could it be that the power supply pulses during the "time out"?
Cheers

If your GS has old software in its computer, the CANBUS can switch power on and off to the auxiliary socket (the dreaded battery update mod which caused major headaches). Its a dealer job to upload a revised software update to your bike.

Also, some Rider units do things depending on their firmware. Last time I updated mine (some time ago) it would no longer automatically turn off when the aux power went off. The firmware update was to prevent the unit cycling if a bad contact was present at the power pins.

Whilst on the subject of power pins, if the unit isn't tight in its cradle, the power pins can vibrate and wear through the back of the Rider unit. I use a Touratech cradle which holds the unit solid and prevents this problem.

If it's a TT Rider one, the mounting system is so lousy that it'll rattle lose and thereby turning itself on and off all the time.:(
If it's a TT Rider 2´nd edition I don't know.:nenau

Thanks guys.
I have the TT1 with my own mount which will not allow movement, so it's not a bad electrical connection. I have updated the tt software and mine will now not turn itself off with the ignition (hence manual tt turn off).
I did have my bike software updated about a year ago when I had the original tt mount with the tt flashing on & off as I rode, as at that time I thought the problem of the up & down tt was the bike software.
So my bike (I assume) has the power socket software fix?. How can you tell?:nenau. I suppose a volt meter across the auxiliary socket should tell if the circuit is cycling.:mmmm

Chris, there were several attempts by BMW to resolve the power socket software, its possible the version loaded onto your bike is one of the interim fixes that doesn't work. The only surefire way to tell is to visit a BMW Motorrad dealer and ask them to check with their computer, they can tell you what version you have and load an update if required.

The voltmeter could tell you if the CANBUS controller is switching the auxiliary power on and off, but not why.

I did have my auxiliary socket wiring repaired under warranty due to corroded terminals inside the wiring connector (not the socket itself). Perhaps your bike has the same fault? Mine went green with verdigris/corrosion of the copper wires requiring the wiring plug on the loom to be replaced.

Cheers Adam, I'll get it checked next time I'm in CW.
One other thing, I have my tt connected right back to the under-seat accessory socket, I see from the drawings that there is a "optional accessory socket". Is this the one that's poking out of the loom at the headstock ?. From the drawing it shows 3 wires, one is a ground so whats the other 2 ?. Do you know how this socket is controlled?
Thanks

Chris, the optional front accessory socket is available in kit form from BMW dealers and requires a hole to be drilled (template in kit) then the socket fitted and the wiring connected. Its easy and cost about £35 if my memory serves me correctly. The wiring has only 2 wires IIRC and simply piggy backs into the under seat wiring via a male/female flug in connector. The socket then shares power in parallel with the under seat socket via the CANBUS controller, hence you still only have a total available current draw of 5 amps via both sockets.

Chris the problem is caused by the settings you have on the unit, dig around and you will see that you have the Tom Tom set to switch it self off automatically when you switch the ignition off or just cut the power to the unit, once you've found it remove the check from the box and the problem will go away.

Just found it, the setting is in 'Battery Saving Preferences' when you save your preferences a check box appears, take the tick out of the box:thumb2

Thanks Dickieboy :thumb
Adam, Thanks for the info on the"panel mount" extension Accessory Socket - X9321 (2 wires). The connection I am wondering about now is the Optional Accessory Socket - X9349 with 3 wires 1.Brown 2.Blue\Green 3.Red\White. This connection is poking out of the loom at the headstock under the ignition key switch. How, why, and when is it used??? any ideas?
Chris

I think that is the wiring plug for the BMW Navigator GPS bracket. Not sure why it has three wires but I suspect there is some form of switching involved rather than a simple 12 volt feed and earth.
