I think I have over filled my gs1200. Should I drain some out or will it be ok ?

Where's the excess oil?
If really overfilled you could possibly over pressurise the crankcase (although it breathes from LH cylinder casing to airbox) and force oil past the crankcase rear oil seal onto the clutch.
If just above the sightglass when stopped, I wouldn't panic.

drop the lot into a very clean container then fill correctly save the excess for topping up

It is aboce the sight glass but not sure how far by. Possibly put in about a good mug full possibly a smidge more. I dont know what came over me, just was not concentrating at the time.

When the engine is running the oil level is about 3 or 4 mm below the upper red ring in the sight glass.

Drop it out and fill to correct level. Its easier than blown seals. BTW, what oil you using?

When you check the level again and it shows overfull on the sightglass, carefully tilt the bike away from it (easier if soemone else does it as it's away from the side stand) and see when the top of the oil comes into view.

big mug or small mug the reason i ask my coffey mug takes nearly a litre

It depends on how much you overfilled it.
Last year, a neighbour's son phoned me in a panic. He had checked the oil level in his mother's car whilst she was away, and found it low. He decided to top up, and added 7 litres. Started car & found he filled the road with smoke.
That's right! There was now 12 litres of oil in a car which normally has 5 litres in it.
I got him to drive slowly to my house and he arrived, with the car filling lane & district with an inpenetrable cloud of smoke.
I put my vacuum sucker down the dipstick hole & pumped out oil till it was at correct level.
Started engine again, and road still full of smoke, because entire inlet manifold and breather assembly was coated in oil. Left car ticking over for 15 mins. Oil smoke gradually cleared.
Took it for a drive, and filled road with smoke again. No power. Knock sensor had retarded ignition because oil was causing pre-ignition.
Drove on increasing revs, and after 5 miles oil smoke cleared. Drove guts out of it for a couple of miles, stopped, switched off ignition & back on again to reset knock sensor, & car was perfect!
Half a litre overfill is nothing, but 1 litre would probably cause churning problems and oil into airbox.
