Too wide? Hard side panniers

On my GS 1250 TE I have looked at Shad as the already bike came with their fitting kit.
They stick out a mile.
I am looking for some hard luggage with decent capacity that doesn't protrude much wider than the handlebars.
Otherwise lane filtering becomes limited.
Any recommendations?

Just stick the BMW Varios on it and be done

The fitting kit comes already fitted with the bike

I've had SW Motech hard panniers with both their fitting kit and adapters for the BMW OEM racks and in both cases they stick out beyond the handlebars. So I don't think those are a viable option. I'm now using Bumot soft panniers which allow me to still filter.

Buy the biggest top box you can, that way you can make up for the narrower panniers.

i have the Givi outback trekker 58ltr
with Givi Trekker panniers (46 and 33ltr
all Panniers add width but they are practical.
I remove my panniers and frames when I'm not touring, so makes filtering during commutes easier.

At the rear mounting points each of the vario panniers for the LC GS are approx 290mm wide in the unexpanded position so if you measure between the mounting points and add that to the above that'll give you an idea. Mine are in the loft at the moment so unable to try them on the bike.

Have a look at BUMOT, better quality than the BMW metal boxes imo. They also do a soft panniers but with the hardware to mount directly to their frames. Very good quality and easy to use (roll top and then plastic buckle to hold)

I’ve got touratech Zega pro 38 liter boxes, the “special“ with a cut out on the exhaust side

they’re just about as wide as the engine

if the front of the bike goes through the panniers will follow

The Vario panniers are what I have - they don’t even stick out as much as the engine bars (just). You’d still have to mindful if you’re steering through stationary traffic in that you’d be able to cut less of an arc, but otherwise I don’t notice their presence in practical terms

Came with my bike. I was going to sell them but on my 4k mile tour, found them to be more suitable for me than hard luggage for me.
Brilliant bit of kit.

Apart from the fact they weigh as much as if they were made from lead, hold next to nothing, open at the side and disintegrate on contact with the road.

They do look good though, I’ll give you that…

That's probably all true but i still never use all the gear i take. They're just so easy.
