tool tube mounting??

I did buy an ancient Ferguson once, to restore. Jings what a row I got! I'm no doin it again!

Toob

I have a 1150 gs and a tool toob, after much thought have done the
following, I have TT panniers which are vtaken off when not required. On the r/h frame I have welded an oblong plate sited so it dosent interfere with the pannier box. A long narrow bracket about 25mm wide is bolted to this and bent outwards top and bottom to suit the toob lugs. At the top a stel loop has been weldd to the bracket which when the tube is fitted will align
with a small plate on the screw on lid so a padlock can secure the tools whilst on the bike. The top lug fixed via a bolt and lock nut the bottom having a nut welded onto the rear of the bracket and a bolt with a knob welded on so it can be secured and removed by hand. it then pivots either way to enable the tools to be removed replaced easily. It won't firt like the above photos to the frames as it will hit the wheel on full depression. Do looka t this before you leap in as you will have trouble even riding down a kerb with anyload on at all.
Dave gs (the longest bit of doing this is painting the b thing!)

Whats the 1200GSA BMW pannier rail tube diameter? 19mm? 18mm?

Just trying to source some stainless clips to suit. Best have found so far are here.

Ta.

I usually use Stagonset for SS fasteners, they do rubber lined P clips here

They look really good... did you go with the 16mm and stretch it out a bit or go with the 21mm model and pack it out?

I can't see the need for one of these :nenau

I got shedloads of tools in the standard tool bag and the seat still fits ok.

I keep a puncture repair and first aid kit in my top box along with a mini 12V compressor and my helmet still fits in there as well

First, my touring bike is a 12GSA with no room under the seat... Second, I tour with G/F on the back - that means carrying all her luggage as well :blast Any spare space that can be created is a good thing :thumb2

Hi Mav,
I think it is the 16 mm. I took the rubber sheathing off to get a good fit. My tool tube is mounted in the right-hand side GSA pannier frame, by taking the rubber off it does not interfere with the pannier when it is in place.

Fitting Tool Tubes

Guys, Thanks for the info on this thread. Yes, I'm one of the guys who bought a couple of these tubes and have offered them up to the bike many times without finding a home. At least one of them was going on the TT panniers, reluctantly, but will try this idea of hanging them off the pannier frame, assuming they do not interfere with the case when mounted.

Am not near the bike at the moment but have ordered the clips to try when back in the UK. BTW, I also plan to use security screws (Star Drive Security Screws 8 x 1½ off eBay) through the tube lid to discourage someone unscrewing it and I think the pannier will make access to the clips difficult enough to put off the passing thief. Will update the thread in a week or so when I have a chance to try this on a TT pannier frame. Cheers Jim

Hi Guys,
Wappings comments made me laugh, I do see the funny side of that
but got a say it looks pretty usefull, you cant get much under the seat even with the remove long bar modification.
Question is where "how do I get one??

Tool Tubes 09

Answer is: I think that will be from me then?:augie

For the benefit of others looking for mounting positions, there are several threads in open and running at present : Show us yours.. has a TT selection, and the start of Tool Tubes 09 has some, whilst Mozzatube.com show some on other makes - plenty of inspiration there for everyone.
FTAOD, GSA`s appear to be easy to mount the TT on the inside of the RHS frame, whilst us Vario owners have to be a bit more subtle in using hangers off the frame rail (and thus avoiding that nasty black thing on full compression).
And yes, I do get Wappings humour too, keep it up :thumb2

Working out how to fit this damn thing and where to get the fasteners from is driving me nuts.

Have just ordered some 16mm & 21mm p-clips + M6 bolts & nyloc nuts from Stagonset. Hopefully the 16mm p-clips with the rubber mount removed will fit the 18mm BMW pannier frame. Intent to mount inside RHS frame.

Will report back when I have the bits and tried to fit.

I got a sheet of ali and fitted two to the inside of the RHS pannier frame. all was OK till I went two up fully loaded. the lower one has slight ware from the tyre, however, do to the travel on the swinging are the break has put a hole in the lower one. this was gaffer taped up. i have now removed the lower one, and constructed a container out of two shampoo bottles (i know a bit blue peter!!!) a bit of double sided velcro on the inside of the fuel tank and on the container and all is OK. This now houses my tyre pump and puncher repair kit for the GSA.

hope the above helps.

cheers.

I went with the 21mm p clips and used a couple wraps of duct tape around the bar to give a good fit :thumb2
