As if the ZFE problems weren't enough, I have an engine oil leak (doesn't smell like gearbox oil) at the engine/gearbox join ant the bottom. When I decide to do the job are there any special tools I need besides a big swear box?

Before you get too excited ....Get down beside it with your glasses on and a decent torch!

Diagnosis!!! before Diving in !!

Check the balance shaft seal #9 ;)

Haynes Manual and only use genuine parts. Been there done it and had to redo it!!!

You will need space and a good jack or something to support the engine and front when it’s split1770.jpg

So if the oil is dripping from below the balance weight "but " not showing above it?

Then you can be "pretty sure" that it is the balance weight seal rather than the crank

I have had a couple in my time on the spanners, that needed the seal behind this balance weight

and if I recollect correctly I did them on the floor without disassembly

I have an old broken 1200 engine in the garage So I can check if that Balance shaft is keyed or not

I can;t remember!!

That's the reason I paid the main dealer to fit a new clutch to mine. I'll do practically everything myself, but there was no way I was going to attempt that.
Dropped it off Monday morning, picked it up Tuesday evening.
Job done.
First clutch replaced at 20 years old and 158.000 miles, I can live with that. 👍🏼🤪

Balancer was keyed on mine and was torqued and then turned a further 180(?)
I fitted a seal from a well known company and it failed within 6 months, same as the bevel drive boots! Replaced with an OEM one and I could tell straight away it was different by the way it went in and fitted.

Once you’ve done a few it’s pretty straightforward :D

Don’t take too much apart, just wheel the rear subframe away. :D
4 hour job start to finish .

That’s some promise you were on to get all that sorted in four hours, I’d be thinking a couple of days for me to do the same.
I know you’ll have done a few but even so that’s pretty impressive :wave

I've seen and saved the 'how to' on advrider: https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/my-r1200gsa-step-by-step-gearbox-removal-process.655998/

Steppers, , when you say 4 hours from start to finish I assume you mean just splitting the bike, or is that the whole job?
@Slime Bomb Did you notice my post above about the balance shaft output seal ??

You won't have to split it if it is that one! I have done quite a few R / K series clutches in my time working on Beemers

Also Remember Steppers is doing this as a commercial enterprise and has done 100s of them maybe

And Remember the adage that you are a broken or seized bolt away from turning a 4 hour job into days !!

Usually the highllghted ones Worse if you have engine bars!

Unless you don't ride in the winter salt??? Then you may be onto a winner

Whatever you are doing? If it is alloy into Steel it is worth "shocking" the threaded section Even Sump plugs will come out much easier if you give it a sharp "rap" with a hammer

Good Luck! Oh and there is a hidden bolt facing forward from behind through a tab on the subframe on the inner side of the frame rail at the right side foot rest assembly about where the Yellow arrow is

Thanks for that 👍, hopefully I won't need it but with my 07 plate approaching 70k miles it's good to know what I will be in for ...... before I get out the spanners 🫣 🤔

Thanks for that DrFarkoff, I'll need all the info I can get. It's going to be a winter job so I've plenty of time. How do you get to the balance shaft output seal without splitting the bike though?

If the guys that know what they are doing can do this in 4-5 hours…… I know where I’d be spending my money……on their labour rates…
I must admit, I'm thinking that as well. '4 hour job start to finish' I'm waiting for a reply from steppers on that.

If it’s any help I live just outside Derby and do have the tools, so I can and happy to assist if you would like to have a go yourself, and as you can see from my earlier post I have completed this twice!!

Well THAT is a mystery !

I am sure I did one without removing the gearbox But my workshop is closed down maybe 10 years now So Quite possibly I had it split and spotted it

Carry on Then!

Any of you whippersnappers want a peppermint ??? :D

But the sneaky bolt is there LOL

Waggy, that's so nice of you and thank you. I'll let you know when I'm ready. Like I said, it will be a winter job so no rush.
