Ok long story short , swapped by 1150gs for a 2012 1200gs triple black with 11500 miles on it , rode it 200 miles home at the start of March and noticed a hot oily smell and when I looked there was oil on the rear of the engine/ gearbox joint and dripped on the bash plate , the bike was an ex bmw uk one and was 30 days out of warranty ,the dealer I bough it from was fab and said no problem get it to bmw near me and have it sorted at no cost to me. They had the bike 2 weeks and said the crank rear oil seal and gearbox input oil seals were replaced as well as the clutch apparently this bike had sat in a showroom for a year and they think the seals had degraded in that time. Got the bike back and after about 200 miles the oil was back in the same place again !!. The dealer has it back at the moment and has been told that I am supposed to be going to France on it in 3 weeks. The bike is on finance and I paid a lot of money for it , as you can imagine I am well F*!ked off with it. Your thoughts please

Nice 1150GS................in your avatar:D

Sorry to hear that .. my 12 plated Triple Black has been fine ... but yours ? Reject it before you go too far and get another .. it's clearly a duffer.:(

Don't be silly. It's got over 11000 miles on it. How is it unfit for purpose?

Because it has been in the dealer getting sorted twice and has spent more time there than he has driven it? Meanwhile he still has to make the payments for something he can't use.

It's really up to you where you go. It's in getting fixed again now so if it was me I would be saying if it does it again your wanting your money back. You could equally say that now and be done with it.

On another note it should have come with a years warranty if it was BMW approved which it should have been since it was theirs.

It sounds like the bike has an underlying problem that the dealer failed to identify or tried to bodge, a bike standing in a showroom for 12 months should not suffer from seals breaking down, fair enough it happening 50 years ago on cars with rope type crank seals but not on a modern bike
Was it bought from a bmw dealer and if so it should be covered by bmw's approved bike 12 months warranty due to its age, the only reason it would not be is if it did not have a bmw service history .

Take a look at this site:-
https://www.gov.uk/consumer-protection-rights

Then, have areas through the following:-
http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/advice/Complaints_process.cfm

then decide what you want to do. Telephoning citizens advice is a good start; their number is listed in the webpage.

The OP hasn't said (yet) whether it was a franchised dealer the machine was bought from so the warranty may have lapsed? Bike could have been out of the dealer network with several previous owners.
Edit: "sitting in a showroom" for a year suggests the bike had a hard life for its first twelve months?

Ok Guys without naming names the company I bought the bike from is very well respected and i have no issue with them , they have been more than decent about this , but they are not a bmw dealer , the bike covered 11000 miles in its first year ( not unheard of I am sure) and then was not used for 12 months , again probably not unheard of. The main reasons for this post were to see if this oil leak issue had happened to others and decide whether I contact the finance company , I will be really pee'd off if I miss this trip to France although the dealer has time to fix it before then

1200gs

:blagblahThe dealer who sold you the bike seems to be playing fair because he sent you to another dealer to get the work done. This is not saying you wouldn't be within your rights to reject the bike.
If the work was done properly and not bodged then the bike would not have the problem. When a dealer does work like that you have every right to expect it to be fixed.:rob

400 miles and major problem has occurred twice. Do you think it's fit? If you think I'm silly what would you do? Do you sell motorcycles? JJH

Just get rid of the bloody thing, it just sounds like a heap of shit and it's going to be a "money pit".
I'd be asking for my money back.

My thoughts after reading these replies..
You probably want to maintain your good will status with supplying bike dealer.. Understandable..
The BMW Motorrad dealer presumably carried out the repair free of charge under BMW procedures.
It sounds like something has gone wrong with either the manufacture or (more likely) the fitting procedure, seals are a delicate item & occasionally the best mechanic in the world messes one up fitting it, mostly they're easy to get to if one does leak, & often replaced without the boss or the customer ever knowing..
In this case it's not the easiest to get to, but the seals & the repair work recently completed will I'm sure be covered under warranty & I would have a chat to the garage who did the work.
I'm sure they'll be mortified that it needs a repeat repair, but u really ought to give them a chance to rectify..
If they're genuine I'm sure they'll drop tools to get this fixed for you.
I also believe any authorised BMW Motorrad dealer can carry out the repeat repair if you have totally lost confidence in them..

Sorry for long reply..
& hopefully u don't need me to say good luck.. After all that's why I/we buy BMWs as the dealer network is worldwide.. :beerjug:

I'd stick with the bike. Probably there is a fault with the shaft running through the seal and it has damaged both seals.... this shaft will need replacing.

Thank you Snaponphil and everybody who has commented on the thread , the bike is in being repaired for the 2nd time at the bmw dealers , I hope it isn't a damaged shaft destroying the seals as it is either the crank or the gearbox input shaft. I expect to have the bike back before the France trip and will ride it until it goes bang I have full european breakdown and recovery and could always complete the trip on the pillion of a mate

Try to keep positive and look on the bright side. You have bought a great bike. It clearly has a fault but it is being rectified (again). I'm sure the workshop involved will be looking at all the possible reasons for this second failure and will be more than delighted to blame a bigger problem e.g. Gearbox or drive issues so that they don't look so foolish for getting the first seal wrong. What I am trying to say is that if there is a more serious underlying fault they will most likely identify it now and you will be best placed to decide on the best way forward. Equally they might just be more careful this time and do a rolls royce job.

Once back put a few miles on it and satisfy yourself all is well and enjoy your trip. Try not to let it play on your mind. As you have stated you have roadside assistance but as a result will not need it. I have just been away on my 2010GS and loved it. I hope yours grows on you and you can look back and laugh about your earlier setback.

Bon voyage

Neil
