Tooway Satellite Broadband

No experience at all, but the 'stories' about satellite BB had it that although down speed is good, UP speed is terrible......Fine if you're watching TV or receiving files, but for playing games where you need a high speed response *YOU LOW PING BASTARD, YOU FRAGGED ME!!* :D they can be rather poor.

Weather also affects them quite badly, but they may have moved the technology on from that point :nenau

EDIT......personally, unless I was stuck so far out in the boonies that I couldnt get a decent ADSL or optical link, I'd not bother.

Pretty much the same as Fanum, don't do it unless you have to. Its not actually the uplink speed that is the problem more the latency/ping. The data has to go all the way to the satellite then back down and lastly to wherever you want via the normal internet, repeat for the return journey. Sat BB is a lot better than it used to be and also a lot cheaper but it still has a way to go before it would be a first or even second and third choice.

I'm currently getting 0.15 MB on BT, at least 5 miles away from the 'local' exchange :(

There is a local community BB service operated from a mast which is another option.

The satellite option came as a flyer through the letterbox.

Avonline Satellite Broadband

Hi - saw your posting.

To answer your questions, our new Next generation Ka satellite Broadband service has only now been live for one year (anniversary on 31st May).

Most of what people know about satellite broadband relates to older technology. Our new service is provided via a satellite specifically designed for broadband.

Hence, fast reliable download speeds - choose 6Mbps, 8Mpbs or 10Mbps.

Hardware is Free with 10Mbps services and nay £99 with our 6Mbps service, we'll also install anywhere in mainland Uk for £99.

System has almost no weather related weaknesses like the older technology and is very reliable. It is, and always will be poor for online gaming so we don not advise heavy users of gaming to invest in satellite.

Other than that, for browsing and especially downloading & streaming media it is excellent - watch full HD streaming movies in real-time if you want to.

All you need to do is make sure that you pick the right data package for you.

If you need anything else, please feel free to email me directly - [email protected] - we're the Uk's largest provider and we've been established for over 30 years. mark

Do you have a decent mobile phone signal? I use a 3G router as an emergency/temporary broadband link, with an external directional aerial in marginal areas. Not too slow, but occasionally looses connection, and is not inexpensive compared to fixed line stuff.

No mobile signal :(

A friend of mine has an system put in by Avonline and finds it very good, the only 2 issues he has found with it are the latency of pings is slower than normal as it's routed through the sat and the downlink is in Italy which also caused his other issues with country specific web sites assuming you were actually in Italy and not allowing you to buy on UK sites, but they were just a couple and I believe Avonline have sorted that out.

If you live in a rural area it's the way to go as the Broadband up here is crap, the mobile signal is worse and what's this 3G is it a city joke.

Uk IP addresses

Just a quick confirmation to AA388's posting. All of our services in UK are UK based i.e. iPlayer, SkyGo and many other locations based services all perform 100% in the UK.

Hope that clarifies.

My mate lives in the middle of fook all squared in North Yorks and he has a tooway Sat Broadband connection

no problems at all apart form in the deepest snow when it sticks to the sat.

Not as cheap and stuck to 4-6gb download per month unless you pay even more

But still a better option than the alternative of 34kbps he was getting before

any farmers near you? there was a thing via seeda (south east enterprise development agency) down here to help farmers get a cheaper connection to satBB or with another form of technology which for the life of me I can't remember what it was bit like 3G but not 3G:blast

there must be a development thing up your way, have a sniff around them... won't do no harm...:thumb2

The last time the BT engineer went up to his house the best advice he gave was to burn down the local exchange as that was the only way they would ever upgrade the cables :blast

trouble is their are only about 12 farms on the connection so its not viable to the company.

But Tooway is better than no way, mind you I have heard that a three way is even better :augie :D

or they're partime lezza's as well.... cos however good you are sooner or later your gonna need a 5 minute break for a breather....mop the sweat off your brow and it's better for them to have something to do....

Iv'e installed this at 3 sites - all had under 1mb internet and flaky, the latency in getting the page is slow but once the download starts its very good.

Be carfull of the download limits, even the unlimited has some serious restrictions, this is from their site for the unlimited Terms:

•If you download/upload more than the standard Tooway 10 - 4 week data allowance of 13 GB and Tooway 10+ - 4 week data allowance of 25GB, instead of being throttled to sub-broadband speeds of 64/16 kbps, your service will continue unlimited but at a broadband peak speed of 1024/256 kbps

But even the throttled speed is faster than your current one :-)

I have a house in France in the middle of no where and the only BB option is satellite. I have just upgrade to Tooway 10 and have no complaints, it works well and is easy to self install (just make sure you have the correct satellite cable, top quality cable makes a big difference).

Any further feedback on this? We'll be moving to Devon in May and the current broadband maxes out at 1Mb, which just isn't going to cut it. Avonline do unlimited 20Mb for £60/month which, while being expensive, isn't too bad as we can claim it as a business expense. Does seem to be the only way to get decent broadband in the boonies.

I know half a dozen with Avonline now and one planned for an install in the next few weeks and all find it very good compared to anything else that is available, If you tell them you've come to them from the Tooway web site when you phone them you can get bits free.
