Any ideas, I can thump it down and tug over the bar a bit but it won,t go down in size. 2004 plastic GS to put box! Thanks.

They can get sticky if not used much.

Best thing to do is lube the mechanism as well as you can using a silicone based lube and also the 'faces' of the case that slide against eachother.

Once you've freed it up do this occasionaly as well as reguarly expanding/closing the case and this will ensure it doesn't seize again :thumb2

Beat me to it. This is exactly what I did with mine and it's fine now.

Thanks but I didn't think it would work, something is jamming it hard maybe. Will have to unscrew it all and see what is what.

They will lock absolutley solid if not used/lubed but you may be correct? Word of warning, it is possible to take them apart but an absolute ball ache to put back together, DAMHIK :blast

Ok taken the mechanism out, greased, put it all back with no joy because it is too tight in the forward corners to the point when it is forced down the inner bit bends out as though the forward corners are having to bend in. Something is jamming in the corners with deep scratches... will rarely use the thing but I'm not going to give up because my mate couldn't sort it. :augie

they just go tight, last thing I'd do is bother to pull apart for nothing, unless bolted to the bike like sensible people do (650 quid and stolen in less than 3 seconds otherwise) turn it over allow some silicon lube to go round the two halves maybe manipulate a bit and it'll just close

they are stupid 1" to low when fully up (alongside 8" to narrow !!!) and pathetic when in small mode... a top box is one of the best bits about bikes

Thats because the cams are not timed properly,

DAHIK ;) i had exactly the same on a side pannier , I even tried cutting a slot in the inner section and it still jammed

I found a repair link online, and it showed how to line the cams up on bothsides, and the refitting method

once done my vario expands and contracts easliy again :)

If i can find the dam link, i will post it up

I have the BMW instructions for reassembly if you want them. Found putting it back together relatively simple with instructions to follow

I hadn't folded mine closed in more than 6 years and thought it jammed, bit of lube and back to normal.... I guess it took at least 25 seconds

from that link his third point is the fix - lubricate it, don't pull anything apart

Pic 3.
I sprayed the rubber seal on the inner clam shell section with Silicon lubricant and then re-assembled the pannier. DONE one smooth sliding expanding pannier. Rinse and repeat for the R/H pannier

Think this is it as one front corner pops up and out completely. Also something has got stuck under two corners with deep scratching and it,s too tight, shrunk maybe as mentioned. Grease ain,t going to do it folks, (tried anyway with white grease) I can tty kicking it down and it is stiff to move. Thanks for your ideas.

Trust me ;) its the cam timing

i'll go link hunting after my tea ;)

Thanks mate, no rush, rarely use them and would probably want it up to its full extent anyway, in fact, after all that... I will just keep it up :blast

I am finding the old style GS small tank bag is ideal.
