Can someone please tell how the expandable top box expands.

I am guessing you mean a vario top box, look inside you will see a bar running around the inside of the box about half way up, it will be held in a recess / clipped in place, just grab it and pull it up and over to the other side 180 degrees until it clips into the opposite side, as you move the bar across the box will expand. Also check its not already in the expanded position same operation to contract it only opposite.

Might it have occurred to you that the fella might 'just might' not have actually seen inside a vario box yet???

You have to understand, I need to ask.

Do you have a GS with varios?
Or you don't have varios, and just info about them?

Just seem a crazy question to me.....but that's just me, maybe:

I find the varios quite ingenious. When travelling I always leave home with panniers in smallest size for easy filtering, but topbox completely expanded. This leaves room for extra stuff I may bring home.

Gotta say initially i thought "wind up" but then thought if the mechanism had jumped a tooth as mine did a while back the boxes are impossible to expand/collapse.If you find that you are operating them correctly and they still fail to work give me a pm i will tey to give you instructions to strip and resett them.Where in Wales? if not far could take a ride over if not too far and this is the ptob!

must admit, if you look in the top box and don't see that bar to pull up, should you really be on a bike?

Unless you have a GSA and did not know about Vario panniers...

Thanks again sorted now works fine the reason for asking was the bar seemed quite stiff and I didnt want to force it if that wasnt the way to expand it.

It should not be too stiff.If it is it may well have jumped a tooth.If you can compare it with another one.If it is much stiffer keep watching I may be posting some helpfull info.I'm just having it checked out now

How tough is the mecanism ? it's all a bit more Hyundai than BMW IMO

The mechanism might seem a bit flimsy. But I've had my Vario boxes (full set).
for 5 years and over 56,000miles of daily use. And apart from a couple of broken cords. They have served me very well.

I have had two bounce off!Both when only lightly loaded on broken surface(the road to my works) topbox is now pinned on.Two 10mm holes two 10mm clevis pins 4 x 10mm body/penny washers and 2 R clips joined with sone push bike brake cable.

Just bought a second-hand top box from Motorworks. Bar appears to be stiff compared to my new side cases, especially when expanding the case. Although it still works fine is there a lube one can spray on the mechanism to make it more smoother?

Re-keyed the lock following the thread in ADV. Very simple, only 2 thumblers did not fit. Now it locks perfectly with ignition key.

Does the top of the box look paralel to the bottom when looked at from side s and front and rear?

I keep my cases well lubed with Silicon Spray. As most of the internal mechanism is plastic. But a squirt of WD40 etc. would probably be OK.
