Hopefully a fluke rather than a design flaw 
Still had the key in the lock with the lid up - knocked the lid shut while trying out my freshly constructed accessory socket to cigarette socket gizmo - next thing I know it's raining tiny springs and odd shaped bits of metal.
Approx 2 hours later, at least half of which was hands and knees on the garage floor with a torch looking for the elusive bits, I managed to get the damn thing back together again. Had the bright idea of taking a pannier lock to pieces to see where the bits went, which was nice.
Still, I suppose you have to take your entertainment where you can find it.
