Top Cases

I was looking for info on top cases but the Motorrad UK web site doesn't seem to list any recent bike models in their drop-down list on the Motorcycle Equipment page. Being Motorrad, they aren't exactly easy to contact either.

There is an expanding top case for the GS - any idea of price? Does it fit the standard rack? Is it readily detachable? Is it any good? Alternatives?

BMW topcase is about £200-ish but you need the additional mounting plate (which attaches to the existing rack) and that costs an additional £90-ish.

I've got one on my 1200GS and it attaches/detaches easily with the ignition key which is convenient and suits my requirements OK. The expandability is no great boon for the topcase (more use for the panniers, getting through traffic easier etc.), and frankly most of what you gain when expanded is probably lost by the space the mechanism takes up!

You'll no doubt get a few useful replies detailing alternatives, especially proper alloy case set-ups and more substantial racking. Other threads (do a search) suggest these are better but it depends on how tough/big you want your luggage. Mine have been great so far and I'm touring Northern Spain 2-up in September so they better do the job!
