Top end power

Hi folks.

Hi have an '05 model 1200Gs and have noticed that it struggles to pull past 5K rpm in top. I can manage it in 5th but have to really open the throttle. I am relatively new to the gs so am just curious if this is the norm or not. Thanks in advance.

At 5k it's starting to get going and coming into it's power band (of sorts!).

They do have a very 'slow action' throttle that needs two handfulls to get it all the way round which catches some people out

Mind you, as Shep says, you could be fighting a loosing battle as everybody knows the RED ones are fastest

You're riding the wrong bike if you're looking for topend power I'm afraid

I have a ZZR1400 thanks

No I just wondered. I have spoken to a few guys with dohc bikes and they can pull to 100mph in top no sweat.

It should pull straight to 115 easy and with a bit of patience I've seen 10mph more than that on my '05

Even with the colour issues it should be quicker than that, I guess it rolls along easily enough when pushed and it's had a proper service, valves, TB's etc?

Try painting it yellow, that's worth at least another 10 - 15mph

If all that fails put TKC's on it then you'll be glad it's blue (and slow)

I've just come back from Germany on my 2008 GSA and it was pulling 7,800 rpm in top which is 132 mph ish on the clocks it would have pulled to the red line but there was a massive lorry pulling into my lane hence i decided to back off!

Was fully loaded up too so bike must of weighed nearly 3.7 ton lol

Struggling to pull past 5k in top doesn't sound right to me tbh

Edit: mines grey btw so thats the way to go

Mine is on first name terms with the limiter.

But then again I do have a 1200RT.....

At 5k I hit a flattish spot but I suppose that is what Hilltop sorts out with the re-mapping.

According to Honda the cross dresser is electronically restricted to 130mph.......................that's less than a GS.
Although MCN did manage to get 131mph out of it.
However the speedo is not restricted to anything

On a bike like this top speed is surely irrelevant though

If your bike is properly tuned and has no problems it should easily pull past 5K in 6th without issue. The only limiting factor on mine is if I have the GSA's panniers on as the wind resistance seems to limit top speed to about 120mph but only because I get scared as the front end goes very light as the rear of the bike gets pushed down by the wind.

There is something wrong with it as they should all be able to pull way past that and hit around the 130. The flat spot is supposed to be there as that's where emissions are measured so the fuel map is leaned out. Getting through it shouldn't be an issue though no mater what colour or age it is.

Likewise, route back from Germany a week ago and it pulled like a steam train even fully loaded - bit of an annoying buzz/vibration though around 5000rpm which is a pain because it makes cruising at 80 ish much less pleasant than 75. Keep the revs climbing and the buzz disappears but fully loaded I'm happy to keep the speed down a little!

Grey is definitely the quickest colour

Top gear is quite high - so unless you are revving it through the gears it isn't going to pull that well - my bikes don't pull too well from 100/105 mph in top - but will if you change up above 110/115 and better from 120!
