When I start my 2012 overhead cam model GSA after say a couple of weeks the top end rattles until the oil gets around. The rattle is only for a fraction of a second but it sounds horrible. What clearly is happening is the oil is draining out of the cam shafts whilst its not being used then as the engine is started the oil pressure is rapidly pressurising again but in the meantime all is loose hence the noise. It does the same rattle everytime the bike is started, but its hardly noticeable when its been standing for shorter time periods.

The bike has only done 6,000 miles and still in warranty.

Is this something I should be advising the dealer of or is it normal?

Thanks

Sure it isn't the camchain rattling ? They are hydraulic tensioner and take a while to pump up when they have been left a while.

The oil instantly drains from the cams, they don't sit in a pool.

Hard to say without hearing it but as Marki says, it's usually the cam chain rattling loose until pressure builds up in the tensioner. Only lasts a second or two.

Mention it to your dealer. If still under warranty they can replace the tensioner.

If you think they rattle on startup, wait until you've dropped it then restarted it!

They've all done this over the years. It's the camchain tensioners taking a fraction of a second to take the slack out of the chain.

If it was the camshafts rattling, the bike wouldn't run for very long, I promise you!

Seems like it is the cam chain tensioner taking up the slack then. I notice its more evident on the left hand side. I will get the dealer to check it out when its in for its 2 years service next week.

Thanks

on the air-cooled 1100's and 1150's the left hand cylinder has the tensioner on the top opposed to the right at the bottom so the left one has the oil drain's out when stood hence the rattle on start up , there is a modification is a new tensioner on them that stops the drain and the rattle i would imagine that its a similar thing,

Mine rattles just the same at 63K think this & odd noises associated with clunky box is why the guy sold mine for a cheap price :P only to upgrade to a 12plate 3 times the cost
