Top Speeeed

Whilst out for an evening bimble this evening, i ended up at Stonehenge.
Where i joined the A303 heading north, just past the Amesbury junction/roundabout i opened her up 2005 12k miles going uphill and what a surprise i had 124 MPH as i reached the brow and still pulling!! feck.
now take clock error out and that's still way more than i expected .

ISTR that BMW have always quoted a v-max of 136 mph.

The most I've ever seen was on my '04 bike - a GPS indicated 122 mph with panniers, tankbag and a Laminar Lip on the screen. The full Remus system helped it hit that quite easily.

I was down at Stonehenge myself today Ash. Forgot about the bloody Farnborough airshow and didn't take into account holiday traffic. M3/A303 was a nightmare. Still, found a really nice pub for lunch in Lower Woodford.

There seems to be very little margin for error in the bmw speedos (not when im wearing them, but the clocks!!) My sat nav is only ever 2-3 mph out from the speedo. Regularly like clockwork always has 136 as a top speed until the bike hit 58k ish miles. (done 64.7k now) Now it only does 119, but the dealer did say it had piston slap. it's an 04 12GS btw. Still got the grunt though. Also, that's one up with top box, standard everything, apart from nippy normals patio door extra big screen....

The bike does not burn oil btw or smoke at all, so a bit confused why a bit of piston slap affects the top speed....

Hope you noticed the camera's going up the hill at Solstice just up from the Amesbury Rbt.

I get up to 120mph on a private road I know and the bike is still pulling strong. It's me that chickens out at this point not the bike. '08 1200GSA with 16K, Remus/Akra/Accelerator. I would'nt go any faster if I had a sportsbike so happy with the GSA.

Surmanator - are you interested in having someone else test your custom map?

I have a BOS end can and remus headers on my 2005 GS. I'm not yet certain on what will be my final exhaust set up so don't want to spring for the dyno just yet. (I might lose the Remus - not sure the performance gains I'm seeing outweigh the extra noise drone at motorway speeds.)

To keep on thread partially, my max is 128 indicated on speedo (top box and high/ wide screen). With vario panniers added the max drops to sub-120. (Both were when the bike was std - havn't noticed since.)

Had mine up to 122 on the GPS two-up with more to come, but it does run out of steam past 110. It's definitely slower at the top end than my old Craponord which did 139 on the flat and got there quite easily (my K12S was in a completely different league).

Top speed isn't really what the GS is about though is it?

Had mine at 120+ in Germany with full luggage + camping stuff strapped to it.

Just done for a bit of comedy - I don't think you'd choose to cruise at that speed and it did take a while to get there.

Took my full loaded GSA up to 110mph with pillion once and there seemed a bit more to come but the bike's not suited to high speeds and feels a lot better cruising around 80-90mph (thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

Loaded-up, flappy jacket and on the autobahn: 123.2mph on the e-Trex. (Speedo is fairly accurate)

I've seen 130mph on the speedo of my 2010 GS on a (private to me) B road in Dorset

No idea how accurate the speedo's are on these so what the true speed was is anyone's guess. I was surprised however how quickly it pulled up to that speed and how smooth it was when I got there. I don't know why I was so surprised - I think I just expected it to be a bit less refined at speed after coming from a VFR but I got the sense it could've carried on a bit more if the straight hadn't run out.

I've had my 06 GS on a "race track" and can easily see 120 - 125 (Remus + Akra can). However, the GS builds up speed slowly so you'd need a very long piece of road (sorry, track) to ever get near the claimed top speed.

A certain S1000RR picked up speed VERY quickly (99 in a jiffy) +showed an even bigger number but the next bend was approaching quickly The claimed top speed for that thing is definitely unobtanium for me.

i had GPZ900 from new and that used to gather a fair pace .
Bought a Super Blackbird 2001 and warp factor 9 Mr Spock
The 1200 did go well though
