I carry a fuel pump controller and a ring antenna 'just in case'. I also carry a quite comprehensive tool kit on long trips but I am aware of the security bolts issue for the ring antenna.

I would prefer to be able to swap a ring antenna rather than just do the spare key tape up job so I'm going to change out the security bolts for torx jubs.

I don't think the drill out will be possible / easy in situ so how do you get the top yoke off? Done a search to no avail.

Roger
(09 model GSA).

I think your wasting your time as the new ring antennas have had no issues. These are the ones with the serial number ending in 247 I believe but may be wrong on that:beerjug::beerjug:

agreed but.........

I agree that I may be wasting my time but don't fancy being on the side of a mountain all alone with no phone signal and thinking that I should have done it though.

Roger.

here's an idea...

if you've not got the latest antenna, get bmw to fit one under warranty, but ask them not to refit the security bolts. also ask for the old one back as a spare.

i amaze myself sometimes

note: if you already have the new part fitted, please ignore this whole post, especially the last bit :D

I've got an original 05 vintage antenna on my bike, should I be asking them for a warranty replacement while it is still working, or do I need to have some "fault" experiences?

CW replaced mine when the bike was serviced. i had no problem with the old one previously, i thought it was part of a general recall type program.

Security bolts

Last year I drilled out the security bolts and replaced them with stainless allen screws whilst I had the steering head off the bike.
What I cannot understand is why security bolts are fitted in the first place, because, if if a thief already has the steering head off the bike, he has already stolen it (the bike that is), and since the ring antenna is fitted, releasing the steering lock is pointless, since the bike canno be got running anyway without a matching key.

I wondered about that, my bike must have slipped through that particular net.

But how do you remove the top yoke?

As my original post really,

Roger

Removing top Yoke

Suggest in all seriousness that:
If you need to ask how to remove top yoke-
Should you be attempting the job at all?
I know we all have to start somewhere in terms of mechanical engineering, but:
It might be safer starting on something where one's life does not depend on putting it back together correctly.
Now I know the same argument applies to changing a wheel on a car, but nevertheless I felt I must raise the point.
Alternatively, and probably the best option, is to get assistance from a friend who is into "mechanicing" a little.

Some pix on where the ring antenna is and what needs removing to get at it would be useful.

Any volunteers?

Ta.

I am a 'competent' engineer and have stripped and rebuilt many a car and bike in the past. The reason for my question is the front suspension is different to the norm. When the 'roundel' badge is lifted under the bars the normal headstock bearing is not evident. The forks are not normal and not held with pinch bots as per normal forksets. All I asked for was a little guidance from someone who may have done this before. No more, no less. Never assume what level of competence a person may or may not have I would prefer a constructive comment really. Thanks anyway:augie
