MAX BMW here: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?model=R1150GS&prod=091998-112003 show the same part number for the 1100 and 1150 as far as I can see.

I believe so. I was under the impresion that only the drive shaft was different for the gs/gsa swingarms.

Yes you are right shafts are different,housings/swingarms are the same,I have a standard GS swing arm on my ADV

That is why the drive shaft is different the splines of the GSA cope with the increased angle better due to the longer suspension travel.

Not sure. I don't think you need to, but they are ovbiously different for a reason.
Better ask someone that has done the gs - gsa conversion before
