Looking at doing the rocker shaft end play adjustment for a mate so I was looking up the torque wrench settings etc.

The respected Steptoe in his Rocker shaft end play sticky thread (Font of wisdom) gives the setting of 9NM for the torx bolts. I came across a setting in the Haynes manual that confuses me .........

Rocker shaft cap bolts ....... 18NM for the 1150

Rocker/camshaft assembly holder 6mm bolts 9NM

So I rang pidcock BMW who read from their computer screen ...... "Cam shaft end cover to Cylinder Head 9Nm".

and to add to my confusion on reading this ....
http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/OREPADv1.0.pdf
OREPADv1.0.pdf (application/pdf Object)

it gives the torque setting of 18NM..............what you lot reckon..... or am I missing something simple and stupid as usual .. ? .........:mmmm

Follow Steptoe. I watched the Police maintainence vid and he quotes 9NM and 20NM + 180 degrees for the cylinder head bolt. :thumb2

Thanks for your post Flip.

9NM is very light though aint it. Thats the same figure as the Valve cover bolts.

When I undid the three torx bolts that I am on about, the ones that hold the bar that you adjust, they were well tight. I reckon they were up at about the 20NM mark.

9Nm still seems weak to me ............. anybody elses thoughts on this please..

Tar ........ BB

I thought that too!!! But who am I to argue with the font.

Oooh oooh oooh, just wached that vid again and it says 15NM:eek:

baetter get the spanners out again :blast

My Haynes Manual says...........

Rocker shaft cap bolts 850 and 1100 models ................ 15NM

1150 models ............... 18NM

Whereas its the Rocker/Camshaft assembly holder 6mm bolts that are 9NM .. !

The Rocker camshaft assembly holder is a separate part.

What you reckon Flip ... ?

Then you will need to check the end float again because you can bet yer life it will have moved with a bit more torque on them bolts ........ :D and possibly the valve clearances .........

Keep in their Flip .............. :thumb

Shouldn't these torque settings then be added/corrected in the Respected Steptoe's Rocker shaft end play sticky thread? :nenau

Brox,

I posted this ages ago mate and hoped at the time that Steptoe would give us the answer. He might reply this time if were lucky .... :)

Only just seen this -

Someone PM'd a while ago about the torque settings, and i gave them the same reply as i'm now posting - leave the torque settings it as it is in the fon't - people should check for themselves anyway. Helps to keep their brains working having to do a bit of thinking for themselves. :D

In general I would agree, but one expects to find the ultimate wisdom in the font, especially if it comes from :bow Steptoe.

One should never assume anything - always check things yourself.
