Folks now the 800GS is out of warranty i propose to do my own spanner work, services etc. Having done a course on motorcycle maintenance ive decided its not rocket science and i'm gonna have a go. ( I wasn't that great technically before and still wouldn't attempt much above oil, filters, pads n plugs) but that said i need some advice about where and which torque wrench to buy.
As you are all probably aware there are lower scale ones 5-25 nm( covering front disc bolts and oil filter 8 and 14 nm respectively) or upper / larger what ever its called from 28 upwards ( Covering front axle bolt, drain plug up to rear axle bolt at 100 nm )
Which one would you advise? am i missing the point and use a WTF attitude and just use a spanner (costly if i mess the drain bolt threads up) .
All nm readings are correct at time of publish from Haynes with a load of white wine on board and watching the footie

Cheers

Torque wrench

The manufacturer I would always recommend, "Norbar" every time not cheap but not as expensive as Snap-On or so on.

Got a couple myself, great gear and they make them for many other brands, probably one of the worlds leading manufacturers - and British, still being owned by the descendants of the chap who started it all.

I have 3 torque wrenches all made by TENG quality is good enough for home use and price is very reasonable, better quality than the Halfords professional stuff and around the same price

Go get a Halfords Professional range one. Before you laugh, all their pro range has a lifetime guarantee just like Snapoff only if something does go wrong its replaced in a few hours instead of weeks. I know loads of professional mechanics that swear by the pro range and never have any problems with them. Course the man with the van doesn't want to speak to them any more.

1+ for "TENG"

One golden rule, if you lube the threads your recommended torque figures will over tighten the fixing and may strip it, this is particulatly true for the smaller / lower torque settings.

teng or halfords pro, snapoff buy in anyway, it could quite easily be the same product anyway

I have two. Both Halfords Professional, both bought a few years ago before it got more expensive.

8-60nm
and
60-300nm.
So between them it covers, 8-300nm.

I've never come across a bolt on a bike needing more than 300nm, nor have I ever come acropper by doing the <8nm stuff to the point where it "feels" rights.

If I had to buy again, I'd do exactly the same.
