Hi all
Just got myself a Tecra 8000 laptop and starts up and then grinds to a halt with an explorer fault.

Invalid page fault MSHTML.DLL at 0167:636d0376

Does this mean anything to any of you please?

The laptop does not have any saved on it so i can do a clean reinstall of windows 98 if needed. Don't know how to mind you.

Thanks in advance

Wipe and re-start. I had something like this on someone's machine that was as a result of a virus. Took me hours and a lot of work to fix.

Laptop fault

I thought that might well be the option to follow, but don't know how to go about it really.

Once the fault comes up even using the start menu i cant get to control panel to do anything.

Did the whole esc button thing to bring up ms-dos but just did'nt want to any further.

The other option is just take the opportunity to get a new hard disc and move up from the present 10gb. And just stick the win 98 on that.

:nenau

Thanks

Stu

Other thing I'd do is move away from Win98, although you may have issues running something like 2000 on that spec.
Sadly it's just too easy to infect a 98 machine now.

Er, actually, it's much more likely that any other Windoze OS will get hit with a virus since far more effort is directed at doing so. W98 (and I used it until a few months ago ) is generally pretty stable, and like any other Win OS, only needs a good Antivirus/trojan and a decent firewall to prevent the vast majority of 'exploits'.

Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with XP which I currently use....along with a router with hardware firewall and AVG (free) and Spybot S & D (also free).

I guess experience varies. I know that I've only ever suffered virii / trojan problems on 98/ME based machines in the past.

Since nothing has been stored on your 'puter, I agree with Turbine2....load the OS disk and boot from that. Once started, follow the instructions to reformat and reload W98. Good luck ! :)
